Chapter 12 - Tracked Down: Mateo's Furious Pursuit and the Truth Revealed

Our freedom lasted exactly three days. We had rented a small cabin in the woods of Michigan. It was quiet, peaceful. We spent the days chopping wood and the nights tangled in each other's arms, planning a new life.
But the mafia has a long reach.
I woke up to the sound of breaking glass. Mateo was already out of bed, a gun in each hand. The cabin was surrounded. Spotlights pierced through the windows, blinding us. A megaphone crackled.
"Mateo Vitiello! Come out with the girl, and your father promises a quick death!"
It was Lorenzo Moretti, my supposed fiancé.
Mateo looked at me, his eyes filled with a desperate apology. "I failed you, Tessa. I'm sorry."
"No," I said, grabbing a hunting rifle we had found in the cabin. "We fight together."
We opened fire. The woods erupted into a warzone. Mateo was a force of nature, taking down man after man, but there were too many. We were pinned down behind the kitchen counter, out of ammo, the wooden walls splintering around us.
Suddenly, the firing from outside stopped. We heard shouts, screams, and the distinct sound of heavy machine-gun fire from a helicopter.

The front door kicked open. Don Salvatore walked in, flanked by dozens of heavily armed Vitiello soldiers. He looked at the carnage, then at us.
"I told Moretti the wedding was off," the old man grunted. "He didn't listen. So, I broke the truce."
