Chapter 11 - Flight in the Rain: A Desperate Escape From the Life I Never Chose

I couldn't let Mateo kill his own father. I couldn't let a war start over me.
"Stop!" I screamed, stepping between Mateo's gun and Salvatore. "I'll do it. I'll marry him. Just put the guns down."
Mateo looked at me, betrayed, heartbroken. "Tessa, no."
"I have to, Mateo. To save you."
That night, the estate was heavily guarded to ensure I didn't run. I sat in my room, staring at the white silk wedding dress they had forced upon me. I was trapped.
But at midnight, my window opened. Mateo slipped in from the balcony, dripping wet from the rain. He didn't say a word. He just threw a duffel bag onto the bed and grabbed my hand.
"We're leaving. Now."
"Mateo, they'll hunt us down. They'll kill us both."

"Let them try," he growled.
We slipped past the guards, utilizing secret passages Mateo had known since childhood. We stole a discreet sedan from the garage and sped off into the night. We drove for hours, heading north toward the Canadian border, leaving the mafia, the money, and the bloodshed behind. For the first time in weeks, I felt free.
