Chapter 16 - The Phantom Heir

For three years, the sanctuary we built remained absolutely impenetrable.

The sprawling estate with its sweeping mái nhật roof stood as a silent guardian against the harsh coastal winters, keeping our family insulated in a bubble of unadulterated warmth and security. Inside our custom 304 stainless steel kitchen, the trauma of my past was nothing more than a ghost story. Mark was the ultimate partner, raising Liam and Lily with a fierce, quiet devotion that made me fall deeper in love with him every single day.

Professionally, my empire had achieved a god-like status in the digital marketing world. APT Vietnam had not only dominated the Asian affiliate marketing sector; it had revolutionized it. Using our advanced text-to-video AI engine, Seedance 2.0, we had launched a fleet of hyper-realistic Virtual KOCs (Key Opinion Consumers). These AI influencers were pulling in billions of impressions, immune to human scandal, operating flawlessly around the clock. I was at the absolute pinnacle of my power.

But in a world driven by algorithms and dark money, the higher you climb, the bigger the target on your back becomes.

It began on a rain-slicked Tuesday in late October. I was sitting at my mahogany desk in our downtown headquarters, reviewing ad copy for a new Q4 campaign, when my encrypted private line rang. The caller ID was restricted.

"Claire Mercer," I answered smoothly, my pen hovering over a contract.

"I prefer the term 'thief'," a woman’s voice whispered through the speaker. It was a cold, aristocratic voice, dripping with inherited arrogance and absolute malice. "You took something that belonged to my family, Claire. And I have come to collect."

I stiffened, my CEO instincts instantly shifting into overdrive. "Who is this?"

"Arthur Vance was an arrogant fool, but he was still my father," the voice purred. "My name is Morgan Vance. He built that empire, and you stole it using cheap digital parlor tricks. You put him in a concrete box, and you thought you could just walk away and play house in your little steel kitchen."

The blood in my veins instantly turned to ice. Arthur Vance, the shadow billionaire who had tried to destroy me, had a daughter. A daughter who had inherited his dark money, his ruthless connections, and his bottomless thirst for vengeance.

"Your father is in a European supermax facility because he was a corporate terrorist," I said, my voice dropping to a lethal, unwavering register. "If you try to follow in his footsteps, Morgan, I promise you will be sharing a cell wall with him."

Morgan let out a chilling, hollow laugh. "I am nothing like my father, Claire. He relied on brute force. I rely on precision. I suggest you turn on the news."

The line clicked dead.

Seconds later, Chloe, my lead marketing director, burst through the double oak doors. Her face was entirely drained of color.

"Claire," Chloe gasped, her hands trembling as she held out her tablet. "It’s our Virtual KOCs. They’ve been hijacked."

I snatched the tablet. Across every major platform—Facebook, TikTok, Instagram—our pristine AI influencers were broadcasting live. But they weren't reviewing luxury fashion or tech products. The Seedance 2.0 deepfakes had been weaponized. Our KOCs were spewing highly illegal, regulated financial scams, explicitly naming our top-tier corporate clients as co-conspirators in a massive international Ponzi scheme.

"The engagement is artificial, but the damage is real," Chloe sobbed. "Someone deployed a massive army of black-market Facebook VIA clone accounts. They are spamming the live streams, mass-sharing the deepfakes, and flooding the algorithms with Google-rejected traffic. Meta is already triggering an emergency account review. We are minutes away from a permanent platform ban."

I stared at the screen, a cold, calculated fury igniting in my chest. Morgan Vance didn't just want to ruin my reputation; she wanted to weaponize my own technology against me, burning my empire to the ground in front of the entire world.
