Chapter 6 - THE CONFESSION IN THE ARCHIVES

By sunrise, the financial pillars of Whitmore Enterprises had completely collapsed.
Federal investigators armed with warrants seized the corporate headquarters on Michigan Avenue, freezing all accounts, asset portfolios, and real estate holdings tied to Richard and Victoria Whitmore.
The morning papers carried screaming headlines across the front page:
WHITMORE FOUNDATION FRAUD EXPOSED: DECADES-OLD DESIGN THEFT SCANDAL ROCKS CITY ELITE!
Inside the private archives of Moretti Holdings—a climate-controlled sanctuary filled with rare historical documents and legal ledgers—Ava sat at a polished oak table examining the original patent papers for her mother’s emerald gown.
The ink was slightly faded, but the signature Eleanor Monroe was unmistakable.
The door clicked open.
Nora walked in, carrying a tray with two porcelain cups of black coffee and a plate of fresh pastries.
"The federal marshals have sealed the Whitmore estate," Nora reported, setting the tray down on the corner of the table. "Richard and Victoria are currently being held at the federal detention center pending arraignment on charges of grand larceny, fraud, and corporate conspiracy."
Ava looked up from the papers, a profound sense of lightness settling over her chest. "And Bianca?"
"Bianca tried to board a private flight to Zurich at four this morning," Nora smiled faintly. "Federal agents intercepted her at the tarmac. Her designer bags were searched, and she's currently answering questions about the missing auction necklace."
Ava let out a long, shaky breath, leaning back in her wooden chair. "It feels... surreal. For six months, I thought I was invisible. I thought nobody would ever care about the work my mother left behind."
"You were never invisible, Ava," a deep, resonant voice echoed from the doorway.
Nora immediately stepped back, bowing slightly before slipping out of the archives and closing the heavy oak door behind her.
Niko Moretti walked into the room.
He had removed his suit jacket, wearing only a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the strong, corded muscle of his forearms.
He pulled up a chair and sat down directly across from her.
"My mother’s designs are safe now," Ava said softly, her fingers tracing the edge of the patent paper. "The foundation can't touch them anymore."
"Moretti Holdings has already purchased the intellectual property rights out of receivership," Niko said smoothly. "We are establishing the Eleanor Monroe Design Institute—a permanent, fully funded academy dedicated to supporting young female designers from working-class families."
Ava’s eyes widened. "You... you bought the rights?"
"I bought them," Niko confirmed, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the oak table. "And the position of executive director is waiting for you whenever you're ready to take it."
Ava stared at him, her heart beating wildly against her ribs. "Niko... I'm a seamstress. I fix hems and sew buttons. I don't run corporate foundations."
"You designed the most stunning collection this city has seen in a decade while living in a basement laundry room," Niko said, his gray eyes burning with fierce, absolute conviction. "You have your mother's genius, Ava. And you have something she didn't."
"What's that?"
May you like
"An army," Niko replied with a faint, rare smile.
