Chapter 2 - THE COLD WEIGHT OF THE BLACK CASHMERE

The black cashmere of Niko Moretti’s coat carried the scent of rain, cedarwood, and uncompromised power.
It draped over Ava Monroe’s shoulders like armor.
She pulled the heavy lapels together across her chest, hiding the torn emerald silk where Bianca’s cruel fingers had ripped the seam apart.
The Aurelia Grand ballroom was so silent that the hum of the crystal chandeliers overhead sounded like a distant swarm of bees.
Three hundred pairs of eyes remained glued to the stage.
Not one person dared to whisper.
Niko Moretti stood two inches taller than Richard Whitmore, his broad shoulders filling out his custom Italian wool suit with terrifying physical presence.
He hadn't raised his voice.
He hadn't drawn a weapon.
Yet Richard Whitmore, a man who controlled half the real estate development boards in the city, looked like a schoolboy caught stealing apples.
"Mr. Moretti," Richard stammered, stepping halfway toward the stage, his hands hovering awkwardly in front of his belt. "This... this is a family matter. My stepdaughter has unfortunately suffered some... behavioral difficulties. The necklace recovered from her bag was intended for the charity auction—"
"Quiet, Richard," Niko said.
Two simple words.
Spoken in a low, gravelly baritone that felt like grinding stones rolling across concrete.
Richard’s mouth snapped shut. He swallowed hard, his throat working visibly beneath his silk tie.
Across the front table, Victoria Whitmore—Bianca’s mother—slowly lowered her silver-sleeved arm, her eyes fixed on the small gold key resting in the palm of Niko’s right hand.
The key with the black rose stamped into its bow.
Bianca recovered first, blinking away her manufactured tears as she stepped toward Niko, her red lips curving into a desperate, ingratiating smile.
"Niko... darling," Bianca purred, reaching out to touch his sleeve. "You don't understand. Ava has always been unstable. She lives in the servants' wing, she resents our success, and she deliberately sabotaged my charity collection tonight by copying my designs stitch for stitch. The necklace in her bag—she must have planted it there herself to frame me!"
Niko did not look at Bianca.
He didn't even turn his head.
He raised his left hand by a single inch, and Leo—his chief enforcer standing near the piano bench—stepped forward instantly, placing himself between Bianca and his boss like a wall of solid granite.
"Miss Whitmore," Leo said, his voice completely devoid of warmth. "Step back from the chairman."
Bianca recoiled as though she had been burned. "You can't talk to me like that! My father is—"
"Your father owns three unprofitable construction firms and a mountain of municipal debt that Moretti Holdings is currently holding in escrow," Niko interrupted, his slate-gray eyes finally shifting from the gold key in his palm to stare directly into Bianca's face.
The color drained from Bianca’s cheeks instantly.
She staggered backward, her jeweled heels clicking against the wooden stage.
Niko turned his attention back to Ava.
He didn't smile, but the fierce coldness in his eyes melted into something dangerously soft as he looked down at her.
"Can you walk, Ava?" he asked quietly, his voice pitched so only she could hear over the hum of the room.
Ava nodded, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Yes. I can walk."
May you like
"Good," Niko said, offering her his arm. "Because we are going to my private office on the top floor. And I believe you have a story to tell me about your mother's dresses."
