Chapter 8 - The Unraveling of Eleanor's Web

By dawn, the police had identified the two intruders. They were private contract fixers hired through a dummy corporation directly linked to Vanessa Harrington. Vanessa was arrested at O'Hare International Airport while attempting to board a private jet to Switzerland.
The Harrington family was officially ruined, facing decades of federal prison time for industrial sabotage, corporate fraud, and attempted kidnapping.
At 9:00 AM, Dr. Marcus Vance entered Room 104 carrying a thick, sealed manila envelope.
Ariana was sitting up, dressed in comfortable clothes Miles had brought from a boutique downtown. Clara was sleeping peacefully in her arms, completely unaware of the storm that had raged around her.
"What is that, Marcus?" Ariana asked, noticing the grim expression on his face.
Marcus looked at me, then at Ariana. "When Julian brought the Harrington files to light, my legal team was able to subpoena the private medical records from your former obstetrician—the one Eleanor Vale insisted you see two years ago."
I stiffened. "Dr. Bradley?"
"Yes," Marcus said, placing the dossier on Ariana's lap. "Two years ago, Dr. Bradley told you that you had severe uterine scarring and would never be able to carry a child to term. He put you on heavy hormone suppressants."
Ariana’s hands began to shake as she opened the file. "He told me my body was broken. He told me that's why we couldn't conceive."
"It was a complete fabrication," Marcus said, his voice thick with outrage. "Eleanor Vale paid Dr. Bradley two million dollars to falsify your diagnostic scans. The pills he prescribed weren't fertility supplements—they were high-potency contraceptives designed to prevent you from ever getting pregnant."
A suffocating silence descended upon the room.
Ariana stared at the forged ultrasound scans, tears dripping silently onto the pages. "She... she poisoned me. She made me believe I was defective. She watched me cry myself to sleep every month for two years, and she smiled at breakfast the next morning."
A cold, bottomless rage washed over me.
Two years of watching Ariana blame herself. Two years of watching her look at other mothers with quiet, heartbreaking longing. Two years of my mother whispering in my ear that Ariana could never give me an heir, that she was an obstacle to our legacy.
"Julian?" Ariana looked up at me, her voice breaking.
I couldn't speak. I knelt beside her bed, took her trembling hand, and pressed it against my forehead.
"I will make her pay, Ariana," I vowed, my voice shaking with tears of pure fury. "I swear to God, she will face criminal charges for this."
"No," Ariana whispered softly, pulling my face up to meet hers.
I looked at her, confused. "Ariana, she destroyed two years of your life. She tried to destroy Clara."
"She destroyed herself, Julian," Ariana said, looking down at Clara’s peaceful, sleeping face. "She is sitting alone in an empty house, stripped of her name, her wealth, and her family. She will live the rest of her life knowing that her cruelty cost her her only son and granddaughter. That is a far worse prison than any cell."
Ariana looked at me, her eyes clear, bright, and filled with an undeniable strength that outshone all the power I had ever possessed.
"I don't want vengeance anymore, Julian," she said gently. "I want peace. For me, and for Clara."
"Then peace is what you will have," I promised, kissing her knuckles. "Whatever you need, wherever you want to go. I will give it to you."
"I want to leave this clinic," Ariana said.
"My private penthouse on Michigan Avenue is ready," I told her. "Top-floor security, medical staff on standby, completely isolated from the press. Come with me. Just until you and Clara are fully recovered. You don't have to forgive me. You don't have to stay with me. Just let me take care of you."
Ariana looked at the tiny baby in her arms, then looked into my eyes, searching for any lingering trace of the arrogant billionaire who had discarded her three days ago.

She found none. Only a father, and a man desperately seeking redemption.
"Okay," she whispered. "Take us home."
