Chapter 7 - The Midnight Kidnapping Threat

By midnight, the fallout from the boardroom massacre had sent shockwaves through the global financial markets. Harrington Shipping shares had been frozen by federal regulators, and Richard Harrington had been taken into custody for questioning.

I had returned to St. Jude’s Clinic immediately.

I refused to leave Ariana and Clara’s side. I had a private security detail of eight armed men securing the perimeter of the clinic, but a deep, primal instinct told me that a wounded animal like Vanessa Harrington was at her most dangerous when cornered.

Inside Room 104, the lights were dimmed to a soft amber glow.

Ariana was sitting up in bed, cradling Clara against her chest as the baby nursed softly. The sight was so sacred, so profoundly peaceful, that I hesitated at the threshold, terrified that even breathing too loudly would shatter the moment.

Ariana looked up and met my eyes. "The news is everywhere, Julian. You destroyed the Harrington empire in three hours."

"They tried to harm you," I said simply, walking over and sitting on the chair beside her. "They deserved worse."

"And your mother?" Ariana asked quietly, her thumb caressing Clara’s tiny cheek.

"She’s leaving Vale House tomorrow. She will never be allowed near Clara. I promise you that."

Ariana looked at me for a long time. The anger in her eyes had faded, replaced by a deep, pensive sadness. "You destroyed your entire social standing for us, Julian. The Vale name is in the headlines for all the wrong reasons."

"The Vale name was hollow, Ariana," I said, reaching out to gently touch the blanket wrapped around our daughter. "It meant nothing without you."

Suddenly, the power in the room cut out.

The heart monitor died with a low beep. The soft hum of the air conditioning ceased, plunging the entire floor into pitch-black darkness.

Ariana let out a sharp gasp, clutching Clara tightly against her chest. "Julian!"

"Stay calm," I whispered instantly, my senses snapping into high alert.

My phone buzzed in my hand. It was Miles.

"Julian! The clinic's main power grid was cut from the basement," Miles spoke rapidly, the sound of muffled shouts and running footsteps audible in the background. "Two unidentified men breached the south emergency exit. They're heading for your floor!"

"Understood. Secure the elevators," I commanded, hanging up.

I pulled a compact 9mm handgun from my shoulder holster—a weapon I had carried for years but never expected to draw in a hospital room.

"Julian, what’s happening?" Ariana’s voice shook with terror in the dark.

"Stay behind the bed, Ariana. Cover Clara," I instructed in a low, deadly calm voice.

I moved silently toward the heavy wooden door, positioning myself against the wall in the shadows. The emergency backup lights in the hallway flickered on, casting long, eerie red shadows across the floor.

Footsteps approached rapidly. Heavy, tactical boots.

The door handle turned slowly.

The door burst open, and a tall man in a dark utility jacket and ski mask stepped into the room, holding a taser and heavy zip-ties. He didn't even have time to raise his weapon.

I stepped out of the blind spot and drove my shoulder violently into his chest, slamming him against the metal doorframe. The impact knocked the wind out of him. I grabbed his wrist, twisting it until the bone popped, sending the taser clattering across the floor.

Before he could recover, I struck him across the jaw with the butt of my weapon. He collapsed onto the linoleum, groaning in agony.

A second man appeared in the doorway, holding a steel baton. He swung wildly at my head. I ducked underneath the strike, drove a savage knee into his ribs, and tackled him hard onto the floor. We rolled across the linoleum, wrestling for control. He tried to gouge my eyes, but I pinned his arm, slammed his head twice into the ground, and pressed the barrel of my gun against his temple.

"Move, and you die," I snarled, my voice shaking with pure, predatory rage.

The man froze, his chest heaving, his eyes wide with terror behind his mask.

Within seconds, Miles and three of our armed security guards burst into the room with flashlights, weapons drawn.

"Secure them!" Miles yelled, and the guards immediately dragged the two men out into the hallway, cuffing them brutally.

I stood up, breathing heavily, my knuckles bruised and bloody. I lowered my weapon and turned toward the bed.

Ariana was huddled in the corner, holding Clara beneath her hospital gown, shielding our baby with her own body. Her eyes were wide with shock, staring at the blood on my hands.

I dropped the gun onto the side table, took a clean towel from the counter, and wiped my hands thoroughly before taking a single step toward her.

"They're gone, Ariana," I said softly, my voice trembling as the adrenaline began to fade. "You're safe. Clara is safe."

Ariana looked at the blood on the floor, then looked up at me. She didn't pull away this time. Instead, her lower lip quivered, and she burst into quiet, racking sobs.

May you like

I stepped onto the edge of the bed and wrapped my arms around both of them, pulling my wife and my daughter tightly against my chest. Ariana buried her face in my shoulder, weeping against my neck, her tears soaking through my shirt.

"I’ve got you," I whispered into her hair, kissing her forehead over and over again. "I’ve got you both. I will never let anyone hurt you again."
