Chapter 3 - The Cold Eyes of the Woman I Shattered

The room was painfully quiet, save for the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor and the faint, rhythmic breathing of the newborn.

I stepped inside, closing the door softly behind me. The scent of lavender and antiseptic hung in the air.

As I approached the bedside, Ariana’s eyelids fluttered. She slowly turned her head toward me. Her large brown eyes, which had once looked at me with unreserved adoration, were dull, hollow, and filled with a bone-chilling exhaustion.

There was no anger on her face. There was only an infinite, barren void. That absence of emotion terrified me far more than any scream or tear ever could.

"Julian," she whispered, her voice barely a thread of sound.

"Ariana..." I sank onto the hard plastic chair beside her bed, reaching out instinctively to touch her hand.

She flinched and pulled her fingers away, curling them weakly beneath the thin hospital sheet. The rejection burned through my veins like acid.

"Why are you here?" she asked, her gaze drifting toward the ceiling. "Vanessa will be wondering where you are. The engagement party is tomorrow, isn't it?"

"There is no party. There is no Vanessa," I said urgently, leaning closer. "I found the bracelet in the locked drawer. I read the note. Ariana, why didn't you tell me? Why did you let me send you away when you were carrying our child?"

A bitter, fragile smile touched her pale lips. "Would it have changed anything, Julian?"

"Yes! Of course it would have!"

"No," she said softly, turning her eyes back to me. "It would have changed your actions, but it wouldn't have changed your heart. You didn't want me anymore. You wanted power. You wanted the Harrington fortune. If I told you about the baby, you would have kept me around like an obligation, or worse, you would have taken the child and shoved me aside anyway. I wasn't going to let my daughter grow up watching her mother be humiliated in that house."

Every word she spoke was a mirror reflecting the monster I had become.

"I was blind, Ariana," I pleaded, my voice breaking. "I lost my way. The pressure from the board, my mother... I let them poison my mind. But I’m here now. I will fix this. I have already arranged for private transport. The best pediatric specialists in the country are flying in right now. I bought a penthouse near the medical center. You will never have to worry about anything ever again."

"Keep your money, Julian."

Her voice was quiet, but it carried the weight of an iron vault slamming shut.

"She is my daughter too," I said, a desperate edge creeping into my voice.

"She is a human being, not an asset for your portfolio," Ariana replied, her eyes welling with tears she refused to let fall. "You chose a merger over our marriage. You looked me in the eye and told me to leave. You don't get to buy your way back into our lives three days later just because guilt caught up with you."

Before I could answer, a tiny, high-pitched whimper came from the bassinet.

Ariana’s attention instantly shifted away from me. The maternal instinct in her eyes was ferocious and tender all at once. She tried to sit up, groaning slightly as the surgical incision pulled at her abdomen.

"Let me," I said quickly, standing up.

"Don't touch her," Ariana commanded, her voice sharpening with panic.

I froze. My hands hovered in the air just inches above the bassinet. The sight of my own wife recoiling from me as if I were a predator tore my soul to shreds.

"Please," I whispered, looking down into the bassinet.

Inside the blanket was the smallest, most fragile creature I had ever seen. She had a mop of dark, silky hair just like Ariana's, tiny clenched fists the size of walnuts, and skin as delicate as rose petals. As if sensing my presence, the baby opened two dark, searching eyes and let out a soft, trembling breath.

Tears finally spilled over my eyelashes and rolled down my cheeks.

"Clara," Ariana murmured from the bed, watching my reaction with guarded eyes. "Her name is Clara."

"Clara," I repeated, the word tasting like redemption and ruin all at once. "She is beautiful, Ariana."

The door behind us suddenly swung open with a violent thud.

Marcus Vance rushed in, his phone pressed to his ear, his face pale with panic. "Julian, we have a problem. There are three black SUVs pulling into the private lot downstairs. And your mother isn't the only one in them."
