Chapter 9

The Locked Room Confession

The federal raid on the Calloway estate lasted until dawn.

Agents in black tactical gear carried boxes of files, hard drives, and ledgers out of the study.

Senator Vance had already been arrested at his country club in Columbia.

Clara, Graham’s fixer and mistress, was picked up at a safehouse near Savannah.

And Graham was brought back to his own mansion in handcuffs.

His face was bruised from the crash.

His expensive Italian suit was soaked in seawater and diesel oil.

Federal Marshals escorted him into the grand foyer where I sat waiting in the leather armchair.

The morning sun poured through the stained-glass windows, casting long, fractured shadows across the marble floor.

Graham stopped in front of me.

His dark eyes were hollow, filled with a cold, impotent fury.

“You ruined everything,” he spat through cracked lips.

“I restored the balance,” I replied calmly.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the navy gift box.

I placed it on the small table between us.

Graham stared at it.

“What is that?” he rasped.

“Your anniversary gift,” I said softly.

I popped open the lid.

Inside rested his father’s restored pocket watch, gleaming under the morning light.

I clicked open the inner casing.

The six engraved words caught the light:

Every moment still begins with us.

Graham’s breath caught in his throat.

For a fraction of a second, the mob boss vanished.

In his place was the terrified dockworker’s son who had dreamed of making his father proud—before he sold his soul for power.

“You were going to give this to me,” Graham whispered, his voice cracking.

“Before I heard you laughing with your men,” I said.

“Before I learned how you murdered my father. Before I found out I was just another business asset.”

I closed the gift box with a sharp snap.

“You wore that wedding ring to look trustworthy, Graham.”

I stood up and looked down at him.

“I kept your secrets to survive. But today, I took back my name.”

Federal Agent Vance stepped forward, grabbing Graham’s shoulder.

“Let’s go, Calloway. The judge is waiting.”

They hauled him toward the front doors.

He didn't look back.

The heavy oak doors swung shut behind them, sealing his fate forever.
