The glowing screen of my laptop illuminated the dark loft.
I plugged in the small black USB drive I had slipped out of Adrian’s office safe on the morning of our wedding anniversary.
Files opened instantly.
Bank transfers in the Cayman Islands.
Offshore real estate deeds.
And email correspondence between Lily Monroe and a rival syndicate leader named Viktor Sterling.
For months, Lily had been leaking Moretti shipping routes to Sterling while convincing Adrian she was his most loyal strategist.
And Adrian, blinded by her competence—or perhaps something more—had trusted her completely.
He had chosen her at the warehouse because losing Lily meant losing his stolen empire.
Choosing me meant losing a wife.
He had made his calculation.
And now, I was going to cash in the receipts.
My phone chimed on the coffee table.
An unknown number.
I let it ring out to voicemail.
Seconds later, a text message popped up on the screen:
I know you're in the city, Claire. Talk to me. Don't make me hunt you down.
I stared at the glowing words.
May you like
Let him hunt.
By the time he found me, there wouldn't be an empire left to protect.
