Chapter 9 - The Autopsy of Lily Monroe’s Fragile Lies

While Preston Vance was being dragged out of social events, Lily Monroe was sitting in a federal detention cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan.
On Thursday morning, I accompanied Julian to the United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York. We sat on one side of a bulletproof glass partition in an interrogation observation room.
On the other side of the glass sat Lily Monroe.
She was stripped of her designer cashmere, her salon blowouts, and her delicate jewelry. She wore a bright orange prison jumpsuit, her hair tied back in a greasy ponytail, her face pale, blotchy, and utterly devoid of charm.
Her attorney, a public defender who looked exhausted, sat beside her, flipping through a three-hundred-page indictment.
"Miss Monroe has agreed to a full proffer session," the Assistant US Attorney told Julian and me through the intercom speaker. "She is attempting to secure a plea deal on the wire fraud and grand larceny charges."
I watched Lily through the glass. When her eyes met mine, a flicker of pure, unadulterated hatred burned in her gaze—instantly replaced by her practiced, pitiful expression.
"Victoria..." Lily’s voice came through the speaker, trembling and weak. "Please... you have to tell them this is a misunderstanding. Preston gave me that money. He authorized every single transfer. I didn't steal anything. He told me he was going to leave you anyway! He said you were boring, that you had no passion, that he only stayed for the cash injections!"
Julian leaned forward toward the microphone. "Miss Monroe, the audio recordings recovered from your Soho apartment tell a very different story."
Lily’s breath hitched.
"We have eighteen recorded phone calls between you and Marcus Chen, the syndicate head in Macau," Julian said calmly. "In those calls, you bragged about how easy it was to manipulate Preston Vance. You referred to him as—and I quote—'a brainless golden retriever with a trust fund who will jump through any hoop if I cry on his shoulder.'"
Lily’s face went completely gray.
"You also discussed your plan to accelerate the Vance bankruptcy immediately after the wedding," I added, speaking clearly into the microphone. "You intended to take the fifty-three million dollar Sterling injection, divert thirty million through your Cayman shell company to clear your Macau debts, and leave Preston holding the criminal liability for the missing funds."
"No... no, that's not true! They forced me to say that!" Lily shrieked, banging her cuffed hands against the metal table. "They were going to kill me! I had to protect myself!"
"You tried to destroy my life, my family's reputation, and Preston’s entire company to save your own skin," I said. "You used his vanity and your fake fragility as weapons."
"Victoria, please!" Lily began to sob hysterically, the tears finally real—not the tears of a victim, but the desperate, terrified tears of a trapped predator. "I'm only thirty years old! They're talking about twenty-five years in federal prison! I can't survive in there! Talk to the prosecutor! Tell them you won't press private charges!"
I stood up, smoothing the front of my tailored coat.
"The federal government does not require my permission to prosecute grand larceny, Miss Monroe," I said coldly. "And even if they did... I wouldn't lift a single finger to save you."
"You cold-hearted bitch!" Lily screamed, leaping up from the chair before two federal marshals forced her back down onto the metal seat. "You think you won? Preston never loved you! Nobody will ever love you for who you are! You're just a walking bank account!"
Julian stood up beside me, his tall frame radiating a chilling, lethal composure.

"Miss Monroe," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper that silenced her instantly. "The difference between you and Miss Sterling is that Victoria builds empires, while you survive on scraps stolen from fools. Enjoy the next two decades in Danbury."
We walked out of the observation room, leaving her screaming obscenities behind the reinforced glass.
