Chapter 13 - Building an Empire from the Ashes of Betrayal

By spring, the business world had completely forgotten the scandal. Wall Street does not mourn the fallen; it only celebrates the winners.
The newly formed Sterling-Thorne Global Enterprise had become the most aggressive and profitable investment powerhouse in North America. Our quarterly earnings report beat analyst expectations by forty-two percent. The former Vance Tower, now completely renovated with high-tech glass, energy-efficient infrastructure, and a stunning three-story atrium, was ninety-eight percent leased to top-tier tech and financial firms.
I stood on the private terrace of the top floor of Sterling-Thorne Tower, holding a blueprint for our upcoming green energy expansion in Western Europe.
The evening breeze was warm, carrying the scent of blooming cherry blossoms from Central Park.
A pair of strong arms gently wrapped around my waist from behind.
I leaned back against Julian’s broad chest, feeling the steady, calming rhythm of his heartbeat against my shoulder. He rested his chin lightly on my head, breathing in the scent of my jasmine perfume.
"The board approved the European expansion unanimously," Julian said, his deep voice vibrating through his chest. "We close on the Munich portfolio on Monday."
"Good," I smiled, turning in his arms to face him. "And what about the New York operations?"
"The New York operations are running like a Swiss clock," Julian murmured, his gray eyes softening as he looked down at me. "Which means, for the first time in six months, Miss Sterling, you have nothing left to conquer this weekend."
I raised an eyebrow playfully. "Is that a challenge, Mr. Thorne?"
Julian’s hands slid down to my hips, drawing me closer until there was no space left between us. "It’s an invitation. I chartered a flight to the Amalfi Coast. Three days. No phones, no financial terminals, no board meetings. Just you, me, and the Mediterranean."
I looked up into his face. Over the past six months, Julian had never once tried to control me. He had never competed with my ambition, never resented my wealth, and never asked me to soften my edges to make his ego feel comfortable. He had stood beside me as an equal, matching my strength with his own, offering a loyalty that was forged not in convenience, but in deep, mutual respect.
"That sounds like an unacceptable distraction from our quarterly targets," I said, a slow smile spreading across my lips.
"Then fire me," Julian whispered, leaning down and capturing my lips in a deep, passionate kiss that made the entire skyline fade into background noise.
When he finally pulled back, his eyes were dark with warmth and fierce devotion. "I'm not Preston, Victoria. I don't need you to make yourself smaller so I can feel tall. I want you exactly as you are: brilliant, dangerous, and entirely unstoppable."

My heart, which had been frozen behind a wall of ice for three long years, melted completely in the warmth of his gaze.
"Pack your bags, Julian," I murmured against his neck. "We're going to Italy."
