Chapter 12 - When Scorpions Turn on Each Other

Two weeks before Christmas, the criminal sentencing for Lily Monroe took place.

Because her crimes involved the defrauding of corporate entities and cross-border money laundering, Preston Vance had been subpoenaed as the chief prosecution witness.

I sat in the second row of the gallery, dressed in a tailored cream-colored wool coat, watching the final act of this tragedy unfold. Julian sat beside me, his arm resting comfortably behind my shoulders.

Lily Monroe was led into the courtroom in chains, her wrists handcuffed to a leather belly chain, her ankles shackled. She looked gaunt, her skin sallow under the harsh fluorescent lighting.

When Preston took the witness stand, he didn't look like the patrician prince she had seduced at private clubs. He looked broken, defeated, and filled with a bitter, consuming rage.

"Mr. Vance," the federal prosecutor asked, "did the defendant, Lily Monroe, repeatedly assure you that the funds transferred to her Soho accounts were legitimate business investments?"

"She lied to me every single day," Preston testified, his voice trembling with venom, staring directly at Lily from the witness stand. "She fabricated medical emergencies. She pretended to have nervous breakdowns. She staged panic attacks so I would leave my fiancée to comfort her. She used me to pay off her gambling debts in Asia. She is a parasite who destroys everything she touches."

Lily shot up from the defense table, rattling her chains violently.

"You cowardly, pathetic loser!" Lily shrieked, her voice echoing through the courtroom. "You let me do it! You were desperate to feel like a big man because Victoria made you feel like the useless, trust-fund baby you are! You begged me to tell you how special you were! You gave me that money because you wanted to buy my admiration! You're just as guilty as I am!"

"Silence in the court!" Judge Miller shouted, banging his gavel repeatedly. "Marshals, restrain the defendant!"

Two federal marshals forced Lily back into her seat, holding her down by the shoulders.

"You disgust me!" Preston yelled from the stand, breaking all courtroom protocol, tears of pure rage spilling down his face. "I gave up the only woman who ever actually cared about me for you! I lost my family, my company, my life, everything—for a worthless whore who was laughing at me behind my back!"

"And you got exactly what you deserved, Preston!" Lily screamed back, spitting toward the witness stand. "Look at you! You're broke, you're pathetic, and Victoria wouldn't spit on you if you were on fire!"

Judge Miller slammed his gavel down with thunderous force. "That is enough! The defendant will be removed to the holding cell immediately! We will proceed to sentencing in absentia!"

As the marshals dragged a thrashing, screaming Lily through the secure side door, Preston sat on the witness stand, burying his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with violent, uncontrollable sobs.

Julian leaned toward me, whispering softly: "Scorpions in a bottle. When they run out of prey, they eat each other."

"Let's go," I murmured, standing up. "There is nothing left to see here."

We walked out of the courtroom, leaving the two architects of our betrayal trapped in the cages they had spent years building for themselves.
