Chapter 12 - The Federal Hammer Strikes at Noon

At eight-forty-five AM, Courtroom 4B was packed beyond legal capacity.

Over two hundred spectators, legal scholars, biomedical executives, and international journalists filled the wooden benches. The overflow crowd spilled out into the marble hallways of the courthouse, where live television feeds were set up to broadcast the conclusion of the most sensational corporate and criminal legal battle in modern American history.

Judge Eleanor Vance entered the courtroom at exactly nine o'clock.

The room rose in unison.

"Be seated," Judge Vance commanded, her voice ringing with absolute judicial authority.

I sat at the plaintiff’s table, dressed in a sharp navy-blue business suit. Beside me, Daniel Brooks had neatly arranged the final certified decrees from the Delaware Chancery Court, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and the Northern District Federal Court.

Across the aisle, at the defense table, Richard Sterling sat completely alone.

Jason Mitchell was brought into the courtroom through the secure prisoner entrance by two armed federal marshals. He was wearing orange prison scrubs, his hands cuffed to a chain around his waist. He did not look at the gallery. He did not look at the cameras. He kept his eyes locked firmly onto the floor, his entire body slumped in profound defeat.

Judge Vance adjusted her spectacles, looking down from the bench with a gaze of unyielding severity.

"This court reconvenes to enter a final, binding decree in the matter of Vance-Mitchell v. Mitchell," Judge Vance stated, her words echoing through the cavernous room. "Over the past seventy-two hours, this court has reviewed an extraordinary body of incontrovertible evidence, verified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the United States Patent Office."

Judge Vance picked up the thick judgment document.

"Let the record reflect the following judicial findings," she continued:

"First: The prenuptial agreement dated June 12, 2014, and all subsequent asset allocation transfers are hereby declared null, void, and procured through criminal fraud, physical coercion, and grand larceny."

"Second: All patents, trademarks, proprietary algorithms, and intellectual property associated with the Stent-X9 Neural Catheter System are hereby declared to be the sole, exclusive, and unencumbered property of Dr. Iris Vance-Mitchell."

"Third: All real property, including the Lake Michigan penthouse estate, the corporate real estate holdings, and all domestic and international financial accounts previously held under the name of Jason Mitchell or Aegis Holdings, totaling five hundred and eighty-two million dollars in liquid assets, are hereby awarded in their entirety to Dr. Iris Vance-Mitchell as compensatory and punitive restitution."

Judge Vance paused, turning her gaze directly upon Jason Mitchell.

"As to the defendant, Jason Mitchell," Judge Vance said, her voice dropping into a tone of chilling finality. "This court hereby transfers complete custody of the defendant to the United States Marshals Service to answer for a fourteen-count federal indictment including: attempted murder in the first degree, corporate arson, federal wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, money laundering, and subornation of perjury."

Judge Vance brought the heavy wooden gavel down onto the sound block with a thunderous crack.

"This civil matter is concluded. Court is adjourned."

The courtroom erupted into a deafening roar of applause, cheers, and the rapid-fire clicking of dozens of camera shutters.

Reporters surged against the wooden partition, shouting my name, holding up microphones, and filming the moment the orange-clad billionaire was turned around by federal marshals and marched out through the steel door toward a life behind bars.

I did not cheer. I did not pump my fist into the air.

I simply closed my eyes, took a deep, clean breath, and felt the unbearable weight of ten long years dissolve into the quiet autumn morning.
