Chapter 11 - The Wire, the Wine, and the Ultimate Betrayal

The following morning at eight-fifteen, before the final convening of Courtroom 4B, the Cook County Department of Corrections holding suite was the scene of one final, pathetic confrontation.

Jason Mitchell sat in an orange prison jumpsuit behind a thick pane of reinforced glass. His hair was disheveled, his jaw covered in gray stubble, his wrists bruised from the steel cuffs.

On the other side of the glass sat Madison Brooks.

She had come under federal escort, carrying a small manila envelope containing the formal surrender of all rights to Aegis Holdings and the Cayman trust accounts.

Jason picked up the heavy plastic phone receiver with a trembling hand.

Madison slowly picked up hers.

"You betrayed me," Jason rasped into the receiver, his voice shaking with venomous fury. "You went to Brooks. You gave them the keys to the Cayman accounts. You wore a wire, didn't you? You gave them the recordings!"

Madison looked at him through the glass. Her face was calm now, the hysteria of the previous days replaced by a cold, hardened detachment.

"I didn't betray you, Jason," Madison said, her voice completely flat through the earpiece. "I survived you."

"I gave you everything!" Jason screamed, slamming his fist against the reinforced glass. "I gave you a life you could never have dreamed of! You were a twenty-four-year-old receptionist at an accounting firm when I met you! I bought you diamonds, I bought you cars, I put you in a twenty-million-dollar penthouse!"

"You bought me with stolen money from a woman you burned alive," Madison replied quietly. "And the moment the pressure got high, you prepared fake documents to send me to a federal prison for twenty years so you could escape to South America."

Jason froze, his mouth hanging slightly open, realizing that she had heard the recorded phone calls from his private study.

"Madison... listen to me," Jason stammered, shifting his tone instantly into a pathetic, desperate plea. "We can fix this. You can recant your statement to the grand jury. Tell them you were coerced by Daniel Brooks. Tell them you were under duress! I have hidden accounts in Zurich that the feds haven't found yet. Thirty million dollars! We can still get out of this together!"

Madison looked at him with profound disgust.

"There are no Zurich accounts, Jason," she said. "Daniel Brooks found those yesterday afternoon. The Swiss authorities froze them at sunrise."

She placed the manila envelope flat against the glass.

"I signed the plea agreement this morning," Madison said. "I am pleading guilty to accessory to financial concealment. I am getting five years of probation and community service. I am giving back every dress, every diamond, and every single dime I ever took from you."

She stood up from the metal stool, letting the telephone receiver drop and dangle by its steel cord.

"Have a good life, Jason," Madison whispered through the glass. "Or whatever is left of it."

She turned and walked away down the corridor, the heavy steel security doors slamming shut behind her, leaving Jason Mitchell screaming soundlessly against the soundproof glass, beating his fists until his knuckles bled.
