Chapter 13 - THE RECKONING IN THE RAIN

When the footsteps faded into the distance, the warehouse grew completely silent save for the drumming rain.

I lowered the revolver, exhaling a long, shaky breath.

I walked over to Dante.

He was still kneeling on the cold cement.

He looked up at me, his gray eyes shining with unshed tears.

“Why did you come back?” Dante whispered.

“Because I wanted to finish what I started,” I said coldly, tucking the gun back into my bag.

Dante slowly pushed himself up to his feet.

He winced, clutching his ribs where Nico’s men had beaten him.

“You saved my life,” he murmured.

“Don’t flatter yourself,” I turned toward the exit.

“I saved my own investment.”

“If you died tonight, the government would seize the remaining assets before my divorce lawyers finalized the settlement.”

Dante followed me a few steps.

“Elena, wait.”

I stopped, turning back to face him in the dim, dripping warehouse.

“What else is there to say, Dante?”

“I lost everything,” he said, his voice cracking.

“My money, my empire, my freedom.”

“And worst of all, I lost you.”

“You lost me the moment you believed you were untouchable,” I said, my voice gentle for the first time in days.

“You forgot where you came from.”

“You forgot who stood beside you when your father was assassinated.”

“You treated me like a piece of furniture.”

“And now you’re paying the price.”

Dante nodded slowly.

He didn't argue.

He didn't make excuses.

For the first time in eight years, my husband accepted full, unvarnished accountability.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me,” Dante whispered.

“Good,” I replied, turning away.

“Because I never will.”
