Chapter 6: The Final Account

The minutes clicked away on the guest house wall clock like a countdown to an explosion. Alejandro felt a cold weight pressing down on his chest, making it difficult to breathe. Twelve million dollars. The money was sitting in a secure digital vault in Grand Cayman, his ultimate escape plan if his marriage with Victoria ever crumbled completely. He had spent two years secretly copying the source codes, believing he was clever enough to hide the digital footprints.
He looked at Arthur Pendelton, who was standing perfectly still by the coffee table, looking like an executioner waiting for the signal.
"If I sign the transfer documents," Alejandro asked, his voice trembling violently, "how do I know you won't just hand me over to the police anyway? I know how Victoria thinks. She wants to destroy me completely."
"Your wife wants you gone from her life, Alejandro," Arthur said, his tone flat and businesslike. "She doesn't want the company’s name dragged through a multi-year federal trial that scares away our European investors. The shareholders agree with her. This is a clean extraction. You return the stolen assets, you sign a lifetime non-disclosure agreement, and you leave the state. If you break the agreement, the folder goes to the Department of Justice instantly."
"Alejandro, sign it! Sign it right now!" Carmela begged from the floor, clutching her son’s trousers. "We still have the Swiss account! Fifty thousand dollars is enough to buy a nice apartment in the suburbs! We can live a quiet life! Just don't go to jail!"
Alejandro looked at his mother, feeling a sudden surge of disgust. This was the woman who, less than twelve hours ago, was tearing Victoria’s clothing and screaming that they owned the world. Now she was groveling on the floor, begging for a life in a suburban apartment. Her arrogance had pushed him into this corner. If she hadn't constantly demanded more money for her lavish lifestyle, he might never have agreed to sell the source codes to the Chinese buyers.
"Give me the pen," Alejandro whispered, his shoulders slumping in total defeat.
Arthur pulled a sleek, silver electronic pen from his jacket pocket and handed it to Alejandro, along with a digital tablet displaying the international asset transfer forms.
With a shaking hand, Alejandro entered his personal security codes and pressed his signature onto the screen. The tablet flashed a bright green verification banner: “TRANSACTION COMPLETE. ASSETS TRANSFERRED TO VANCE ENTERPRISES TREASURY MAIN ACCOUNT.”
Arthur took the tablet back, checked the confirmation code, and nodded with satisfaction. He slipped the device back into his briefcase. "Thank you, Mr. Vance. You've made the correct choice. The offshore accounts are now empty, and your corporate clearance has been permanently deleted from the international registry."
"Can we go now?" Alejandro asked, his voice hollow.
"The gate is open for you until noon," Arthur said, walking toward the front door. "But I must remind you, the security team will ensure you don't take anything that doesn't belong to you. Have a nice afternoon."
With that, Arthur Pendelton stepped out into the bright sunshine, closing the door behind him. The black sedan in the lane immediately started its engine and drove away, disappearing down the main road.
Carmela scrambled to her feet, wiping her tear-stained face. "Come on, Alejandro! Grab the suitcases! We need to leave before Victoria changes her mind!"
They dragged the heavy leather bags out of the guest house and walked down the long, gravel driveway toward the main iron gates of the estate. The afternoon sun was blindingly hot, and Alejandro could feel sweat soaking through his expensive executive shirt. He looked back one last time at the grand mansion. Through the glass window of the master bedroom, he could see a shadow standing still, watching them leave. It was Victoria. She didn't wave. She didn't smile. She just watched her old life being carried away in two suitcases.
They reached the massive iron gates at exactly 11:55 AM. Two large security guards in black uniforms stood by the guardhouse, their arms crossed over their chests.
"Open the gate," Alejandro said, trying to maintain a shred of dignity.
One of the guards looked at a digital manifest on his wrist display. "Alejandro Vance and Carmela Vance? Step forward for a standard property inspection before departure."
"What?!" Carmela yelled, her old anger flaring up for a second. "We are leaving! You have no right to search us!"
"By order of the property owner, ma'am, any luggage leaving the premises must be scanned for corporate property," the guard said firmly, stepping forward and grabbing Carmela’s leather suitcase without asking.
He unzipped the bag, tossing aside her silk dresses until he reached a small, velvet jewelry box hidden at the bottom. He opened it, revealing a stunning, diamond-encrusted gold watch—the one Carmela had bragged about earlier.
"This item matches the corporate purchase ledger from November of last year," the guard said, pulling the watch from the box. "It is corporate property. It stays here."
"No! That's mine! My son gave it to me!" Carmela screamed, trying to grab the watch back, but the second guard stepped between them, his hand resting firmly on his security holster.
"Step back, ma'am," the guard ordered, his voice deep and threatening.
Alejandro grabbed his mother's arm, pulling her away. "Let it go, Mom. Just let it go."
The guard zipped the bag back up and pushed it across the gate line. The massive iron gates slowly groaned open, revealing the public sidewalk outside the estate.
They stepped through the gates, the heavy metal bars slamming shut behind them with a loud, definitive CLANG.
They were outside. On the street. With nothing but two bags of clothes and a Swiss credit card.
Carmela pulled out her phone, her hands shaking as she opened her banking app to check the Swiss account. "It's okay... we still have the fifty thousand. We can get a taxi. We can find a place."
She entered her password, but as the screen loaded, a large error message popped up in bold red text: “ACCOUNT FROZEN BY ORDER OF THE ZURICH FINANCIAL AUTHORITY PENDING AN INTERNATIONAL MONEY LAUNDERING INVESTIGATION.”
Carmela let out a choked, silent gasp, the phone slipping from her fingers and shattering on the hard concrete sidewalk. She looked at Alejandro, her eyes filled with absolute horror.
"Alejandro..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "The money... the Swiss account... it’s frozen."

Alejandro stared at the broken phone on the ground. The midday sun beat down on them mercilessly. They didn't even have enough cash to buy a bus ticket.
Suddenly, a sleek white sports car pulled up to the curb right in front of them, its engine roaring with power. The window rolled down slowly, revealing the face of Marcus, Alejandro’s former corporate lawyer—and the man who had blocked his number just hours ago.
