Chapter 5: The Stranger in the Garden

The air inside the guest house was warm and stagnant, the automated air conditioning having already been deactivated by the main server room. Carmela rushed into the bedroom, frantically pulling open drawers, throwing silk blouses and designer shoes into two large leather suitcases. Her hands were shaking so violently she dropped her pearl necklace, sending the tiny white beads scattering across the hardwood floor.

"Help me, Alejandro!" she yelled, her voice filled with a desperate panic. "Don't just stand there like a statue! We need to secure whatever we can before that woman calls the police!"

Alejandro was standing by the bedroom window, his eyes fixed on the black sedan parked just outside the garden wall. The engine was purring softly, a steady, low rumble that felt menacing in the quiet afternoon.

"Someone is out there, Mom," Alejandro said, his voice tight.

"I don't care about some car!" Carmela snapped, slamming a suitcase shut. "We need to leave! We can stay at the Grand Plaza Hotel downtown. I have a secret credit card from a Swiss account your father left me. Victoria doesn't know about it."

Alejandro turned around, a flicker of hope illuminating his desperate face. "A Swiss account? How much is in it?"

"About fifty thousand dollars," Carmela said, wiping sweat from her forehead. "It's not a fortune, but it's enough to hire a top-tier defense lawyer to fight this corporate suspension. We can sue her for wrongful termination, Alejandro! We can claim she forced you out because of a personal marital dispute!"

Before Alejandro could answer, the front door of the guest house clicked open.

Both Alejandro and Carmela froze, their breath catching in their throats. They hadn't heard anyone knock.

Alejandro cautiously stepped out of the bedroom into the small living room area. Standing by the doorway was a man he had never seen before. The stranger was short, thin, wearing a wrinkled gray suit and wire-rimmed glasses. He looked like an ordinary accountant or a low-level clerk, but his eyes were sharp, cold, and entirely devoid of emotion. He held a thick manila folder under his arm.

"Who the hell are you?" Alejandro demanded, trying to sound brave. "How did you get past the main gate guards?"

"The gate guards are currently being replaced by a private security firm hired by your wife, Mr. Vance," the man said, his voice flat and robotic. He stepped further into the room, placing the manila folder on the coffee table. "My name is Arthur Pendelton. I am an independent forensic investigator representing the minority shareholders of Vance Enterprises—the ones who hold the remaining 49% of the corporate trust."

Carmela stepped out of the bedroom, her face twisted in a defensive scowl. "We don't have anything to say to you! Get out of this house before my son throws you out!"

Arthur Pendelton looked at Carmela, a faint, humorless smile touching his lips. "Mrs. Vance, if your son tries to throw me out, he will likely pull a muscle. He is not a fighter; he is a bureaucrat who forgot his place. I suggest you sit down and listen to what I have to say, because it concerns your freedom."

"Our freedom?" Alejandro swallowed hard, stepping closer to the table. "What is that folder?"

Arthur opened the folder, revealing a stack of documents covered in red stamps that read “CONFIDENTIAL – INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE.”

"While your wife was auditing the three million dollars you funnelled to Spain," Arthur explained, tapping the papers with his finger, "my team was looking into the offshore shell companies you created three years ago under the name 'Vance Global Holdings.' It seems you’ve been selling proprietary tech designs—specifically the encryption algorithms developed by Victoria's father—to a competitor based in Beijing."

Alejandro felt the room spin. His knees buckled, and he had to grab the back of the sofa to keep from falling. "That... that's not true. Those were just preliminary market research reports! I didn't sell anything!"

"The Chinese bank transfers into your private Cayman Islands account say otherwise, Alejandro," Arthur said softly. "The total amount is twelve million dollars. That isn't corporate embezzlement, Mr. Vance. That is international corporate espionage and intellectual property theft. It’s a federal crime. The FBI has been tracking the IP addresses used for the data transfers for six months. They were just waiting for Victoria to revoke your executive immunity."

Carmela looked at her son, her face turning completely white. "Alejandro... what is he talking about? Twelve million dollars? You told me you were just getting a bonus!"

"Shut up, Mom!" Alejandro screamed, his voice cracking with pure terror. He looked at Arthur. "Why are you telling me this? If you're with the FBI, why aren't you arresting me?"

"I’m not with the FBI, Alejandro. I work for the shareholders," Arthur said, closing the folder with a sharp snap. "The shareholders don't want a public scandal that destroys the company's stock value. They want the twelve million dollars returned to the corporate treasury immediately. If you sign over the Cayman account and give us the decryption keys for the files you sent to Beijing, we might forget to hand this folder to the federal prosecutor."

"And if I refuse?" Alejandro whispered, sweat dripping from his chin.

"If you refuse, the federal warrant will be executed at exactly 12:00 PM today," Arthur said, looking at his watch. It was 11:35 AM. "You have twenty-five minutes to decide whether you want to spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary or walk away from this mansion with your life."

Carmela collapsed onto the floor, sobbing hysterically among her scattered pearl beads. "Alejandro, do something! Give them the money! Don't let them take you away!"

Alejandro looked out the window at the black sedan. He realized that Arthur Pendelton wasn't just an investigator; he was a shark sent to clean up the mess before the world found out. And Victoria was the one holding the leash.
