Chapter 10: The Reckoning (Open Ending)

The peaceful morning air of the estate was shattered by the sharp, metallic echo of an alarm system blaring from the main house. Automated security shutters began sliding down over the mansion's windows with a deep hydraulic hum, transforming the beautiful glass home into an impenetrable steel fortress.

David instantly drew his suppressed pistol, stepping in front of Victoria, his eyes scanning the thick bushes near the rose gardens. "Victoria, we need to move to the secure bunker inside the mansion immediately. The perimeter is compromised."

"What about me?!" Alejandro screamed, scrambling to his feet, his face twisted in absolute terror. He could hear the sound of heavy footsteps running through the dry leaves just fifty yards away. "Don't leave me out here! They’ll kill me!"

Victoria looked at Alejandro, her expression a chilling mix of absolute calm and calculated indifference. She didn't look like a angry ex-wife anymore; she looked like a CEO deciding whether to liquidate a failed asset.

"Your three minutes are up, Alejandro," she said softly over the sound of the blaring alarm.

"Victoria, please! I'm your husband!" Alejandro begged, reaching out to grab her hand, but David quickly stepped between them, driving the butt of his pistol into Alejandro’s chest, sending him crashing backward onto the stone floor of the pavilion.

"Stay back, Mr. Vance," David ordered. He turned to Victoria. "Ma'am, go. Now."

Victoria turned and walked calmly down the stone steps of the pavilion, heading toward the private rear entrance of the mansion, her white dress fluttering in the wind. She didn't look back once. She didn't check to see if Alejandro was following. She just walked into safety, the heavy steel door of the mansion kitchen clicking shut behind her with a definitive, final lock.

Alejandro lay on the floor, gasping for air from David's blow. He looked around wildly. David was already moving backward, his weapon raised, covering Victoria’s retreat, leaving Alejandro completely alone in the center of the open pavilion.

Suddenly, the thick hedge of the rose garden parted violently. Two large men stepped out onto the gravel path. They weren't wearing the suits of corporate lawyers or the uniforms of private security. They wore black tactical jackets, heavy boots, and masks that covered their faces. In their hands, they carried compact, suppressed submachine guns.

Their eyes instantly locked onto Alejandro.

"There he is," one of the men muttered, his voice muffled by the mask. "The broker said he's the one who spent our deposit."

"Wait! Please!" Alejandro scrambled backward on his hands and knees until his back hit the glass table of the pavilion, shattering a vase of flowers. "I can get the data! My wife has it! She’s inside the house! If you help me break in, I can get you the real encryption keys!"

The two assassins didn't answer. They didn't slow down. They walked forward with a slow, professional confidence, raising their weapons, their laser sights cutting through the shadow of the pavilion, forming two bright red dots directly onto Alejandro’s chest.

From inside the secure bunker of the mansion, Victoria sat in front of a wall of high-definition security monitors. She could see the entire garden pavilion in perfect detail. She could see the two assassins closing in on her husband. Her hand rested on the main security panel, right over a big red button labeled: “ACTIVATE PERIMETER DEFENSE CRYOMIST SYST."—an automated non-lethal defense system that would freeze the garden area in seconds, neutralizing everyone outside.

Her finger hovered over the button.

On the screen, one of the assassins raised his weapon, his finger tightening on the trigger. Alejandro closed his eyes, screaming for mercy in the middle of his ruined kingdom.

Will Victoria press the button to save the man who betrayed her, or will she let the shadows of his own crimes swallow him whole?

The monitor screen flickers, the countdown reaches zero, and the garden goes completely silent.
