Chapter 32 - The Final Monopoly

We returned to the villa in silence. The heavy mahogany doors of the study closed behind us, shutting out the brilliant Mediterranean sun and sealing us inside the cool, stone-walled sanctuary of our private retreat.
Roman laid the wax-sealed envelope on the mahogany desk, breaking the red seal with a swift, deliberate motion of his thumb. He pulled out a thick stack of encrypted micro-disks, handwritten financial ledgers, and global routing maps detailing the hidden wealth of the eastern syndicates.
I stood beside him, resting my hand on his shoulder as we scanned the documents. It was everything. Every hidden account, every corrupt politician, every illicit shipping lane that had eluded our reach for years was laid bare before us, handed over on a silver platter by a terrified old guard recognizing the absolute supremacy of our reign.
“They’re handing us the entire world,” I whispered, looking up at Roman in astonishment.
“They aren't handing it to us,” Roman corrected quietly, a slow, grim smile touching his lips. “They’re surrendering to us.”
He turned around, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me against his chest. The weight of the documents on the desk didn't matter anymore; the external threats were gone, permanently extinguished by the sheer gravitational pull of our power.
“What do you want to do with it?” Roman murmured against my hair, his lips brushing softly against my temple.
“Burn the ledgers,” I answered instantly, without a moment's hesitation.
Roman pulled back slightly, looking down into my eyes with genuine surprise. “Burn them? This is the final monopoly. This is absolute, undisputed control of every market on earth.”
“We don't need absolute control of the eastern hemisphere, Roman,” I said softly, cupping his face with my hands, my gaze locking onto his with absolute conviction. “We already won. We have each other, we have our home, and our empire in Chicago is secure. If we take the eastern routes, we become the very monsters we spent years destroying.”
Roman stared at me, the hard, ruthless edge of the syndicate boss melting away completely, replaced by a profound, overwhelming wave of love and reverence.

“You never cease to amaze me, Harper,” he whispered, a brilliant, genuine smile breaking across his face.
He reached over to the heavy iron fireplace, picked up a long metal lighter, and touched the flame directly to the corner of the stack of documents. We stood together in silence, watching the encrypted micro-disks and handwritten ledgers curl, blacken, and turn to ash, burning away the last remaining ghosts of the global criminal underworld once and for all.
