Chapter 9 - The First Strike: When the Dust Turned Into Raw Crystalline Gold

For nine agonizing days, the rhythmic, deafening pounding of the drill rig shook the desolate valley.

THUD! THUD! THUD!

Ekenna worked twenty hours a day. He slept on a thin canvas cot inside a military surplus tent pitched beside the rig. He ate roasted corn and drank boiled borehole water. When the drill pipe jammed at forty meters, he climbed the greasy steel derrick with a heavy pipe wrench, dislodging the stuck casing with his bare, bleeding hands.

By the ninth day, his diesel supply was nearly empty. He had only two gallons of fuel remaining in the plastic jerrycan—enough for perhaps forty-five minutes of drilling.

His loan was due in twenty-one days. If he failed to hit the core vein today, the moneylender would seize his mother’s warehouse, leaving her homeless, and Ekenna would face financial ruin and potential imprisonment.

"Just ten more meters," Ekenna prayed, his voice hoarse from inhaling diesel fumes and rock dust. "Lord God of my father, just ten meters."

He poured the last drops of diesel into the fuel tank and engaged the hydraulic clutch.

The drill bit plunged deeper: Fifty-two meters... fifty-five meters... fifty-eight meters...

Suddenly, the tone of the engine changed.

The high-pitched grinding screech of hard quartzite transformed into a deep, vibrating, rhythmic hum. The rotation speed slowed dramatically as the drill bit met immense resistance.

Then, the high-pressure pneumatic return valve blew.

A massive plume of pulverized rock dust erupted from the borehole collar, rocketing thirty feet into the midday air like a volcanic geyser.

Ekenna ran forward, shielding his eyes with his forearm.

The dust raining down upon him was not red clay. It was not gray shale.

It was a brilliant, shimmering, snow-white crystalline powder that sparkled in the blinding sunlight like crushed diamonds, intermixed with heavy, lustrous black metallic grains.

Ekenna caught a handful of the falling dust in his trembling palms.

He held his breath. He took a bottle of dilute hydrochloric acid and dropped two drops onto the powder. No effervescence—ruling out common carbonate minerals. He examined the cleavage of the crystalline grains under his pocket loupe.

Perfect prismatic cleavage. High lithium spodumene.

And within the core recovery barrel, when he pulled the inner tube to the surface, was a solid, unbroken three-meter cylinder of pure, unadulterated crystalline pegmatite ore, marbled with thick veins of glossy tantalite.

It was not a small vein.

The drill had penetrated the roof of a massive, continuous subterranean mineral dome spanning hundreds of hectares.

Ekenna fell onto the pile of sparkling white dust beneath the rig, clutching the core sample against his chest. He laughed until his throat hurt, and then he wept openly under the vast African sky.

The broke boy who had been abandoned in the dust of the graduation field had just struck the richest lithium-tantalite mother lode in the entire sub-region.
