DADDY, DON’T DRINK IT / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9

Nora was found because of Lily’s drawing.

Three days after the tea incident, Bennett showed Lily photographs of familiar places.

Not as interrogation.

A child specialist conducted the conversation.

Lily mentioned “the red house.”

Ethan frowned.

“What red house?”

“Nora goes there.”

“How do you know?”

“She took me once.”

Ethan felt cold.

“When?”

“When you were sleeping.”

Lily had been told Ethan knew.

He did not.

She described a small brick house near a lake.

A room with red curtains.

Nora met Uncle Charles there.

Lily played with dolls in another room.

She overheard them arguing.

“About what?”

Lily remembered one sentence.

“The girl gets everything if he dies wrong.”

Ethan stared.

A six-year-old had heard it months earlier without understanding.

Property records located a lake cottage owned by a Charles shell company.

Police searched.

Nora was not there.

But evidence was.

Caroline’s missing financial records.

Original trust documents.

Blank medical forms.

Several small unlabeled containers collected for analysis.

And photographs.

Ethan asleep at his desk.

Ethan stumbling after standing.

Ethan signing papers.

Nora had documented the symptoms she was allegedly creating.

Then photographs of Lily.

Crying.

Throwing a toy.

Refusing dinner.

One image showed Lily screaming while Nora held her wrist.

The caption:

AGGRESSIVE EPISODE.

Ethan stared.

“She was building a case against my daughter.”

Exactly.

Then a locked drawer.

Inside:

Passport.

Cash.

Nora’s second phone.

And Caroline’s necklace.

Ethan recognized it instantly.

A thin gold chain with a small moon pendant.

Caroline wore it the night she died.

Afterward, it disappeared.

Nora told Ethan paramedics probably lost it.

Why did she have it?

Bennett bagged it.

Then they recovered Nora’s voice memos.

One:

Caroline knows too much.

Another:

Ethan is easier when guilty.

Another:

Lily watches everything.

Then the final:

If the tea fails, Charles wants Plan B.

Ethan stared.

“What is Plan B?”

Nobody knew.

Then his phone rang.

Lily’s school.

“Mr. Carter?”

“Yes.”

“Someone just attempted to pick Lily up.”

Ethan stood.

“What?”

“A woman claiming to be her aunt.”

His blood went cold.

“Where is Lily?”

“With us.”

“Lock the school.”

“We have.”

“Who was the woman?”

A pause.

“She left when staff requested identification.”

Security footage arrived ten minutes later.

Nora.

Plan B was Lily.
