DADDY, DON’T DRINK IT / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11

Nora’s arrest did not make Lily feel safe.

That surprised Ethan.

He expected relief.

Instead Lily began checking doors.

Refused tea.

Asked whether Nora could escape.

Slept beside Ethan for three weeks.

One night she whispered:

“What if I didn’t see?”

Ethan looked at her.

“What?”

“The tea.”

His chest tightened.

“What if I was upstairs?”

He understood.

His six-year-old daughter was replaying responsibility.

“If you didn’t see it, that would not be your fault.”

“But you would drink it.”

“Maybe.”

“You could die.”

“Maybe.”

Lily started crying.

“So I had to.”

Ethan pulled her closer.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No, Lily.”

She looked angry.

“I saved you.”

He nodded.

“You did.”

That mattered.

He would not take it away.

Then:

“And it was never supposed to be your job.”

Lily stared.

“Nora made it your job because she put you in that situation.”

Ethan wiped her tears.

“You were brave.”

“But?”

“No but.”

A pause.

“You were brave.”

Another.

“And adults should have protected you before you needed to be.”

Lily eventually began seeing a child therapist independent of anyone connected to the Carter family.

Ethan attended parenting sessions too.

He learned not to interrogate Lily for details whenever investigators found something new.

A child was not evidence first.

She was a child.

Detective Bennett worked through specialists when Lily’s memory mattered.

Ethan focused on breakfast.

School.

Bedtime.

Making sure she knew ordinary life could return.

Then Caroline’s reopened autopsy produced stronger evidence.

The same unusual toxic marker present in Ethan’s tea appeared in preserved biological material from Caroline.

Combined with Nora’s recorded admission and delayed emergency call, prosecutors charged Nora in connection with Caroline’s death.

Charles faced conspiracy and financial charges.

Michael Grant cooperated and lost his license.

Dr. Hale faced professional discipline and fraud-related charges.

Ethan looked at the growing case.

One dangerous person had not done everything alone.

She had needed people willing to ignore smaller wrongs.

Then those smaller wrongs grew.
