Chapter 7

The male voice belonged to Charles Vance.
Ethan knew him immediately once investigators enhanced the recording.
Uncle Charles.
His late father’s younger brother.
Board member.
Family adviser.
Lily called him Uncle Charlie.
Ethan stared at Bennett.
“No.”
“You recognize him?”
“Yes.”
Charles had opposed Caroline’s control of her inheritance years earlier.
He believed the shares should be integrated into Carter holdings after she married Ethan.
Caroline refused.
When she died, Lily inherited them directly.
Charles hated that too.
“A child should not control institutional assets,” he once said.
Ethan thought he meant governance philosophy.
Now Bennett showed financial transfers.
Nora sent money to Charles-controlled companies.
Charles helped her move stolen assets.
Motive expanded.
Nora wanted access.
Charles wanted consolidation.
Caroline stood in both their way.
Then Lily did.
Ethan whispered:
“They’ve been doing this since Caroline was alive.”
Yes.
Charles was arrested at his office.
He denied everything.
Then investigators played the call.
His attorney requested a break.
By evening Charles was negotiating.
He claimed Nora planned the toxic tea alone.
He claimed he only helped with financial fraud.
Bennett asked:
“What happened to Caroline?”
Charles looked at the table.
“I don’t know.”
“What did Nora tell you?”
“That Caroline had a medical emergency.”
“Before or after she died?”
Charles did not answer.
That silence mattered.
After pressure, he admitted Nora called him the night before Caroline died.
“She said Caroline had found the transfers.”
“What did you say?”
“To calm her down.”
“How?”
“I meant legally.”
“Exact words.”
Charles closed his eyes.
“Handle Caroline before she handles us.”
Ethan stared from behind the glass.
Bennett asked:
“Did you mean kill her?”
“No.”
“Could Nora have understood it that way?”
“I don’t know.”
Cowardice again.
Ambiguous language useful until consequences arrived.
Then Charles revealed something else.
Caroline had planned to remove Ethan as trustee over Lily’s inheritance.
Ethan went still.
“Why?”
According to Caroline’s attorney, she worried Ethan trusted Charles too much.
She planned independent management.
Had she lived, she might have protected Lily’s assets years earlier.
Ethan felt shame.
Caroline had been protecting their daughter from risks he refused to see.
Then Charles said:
“Nora hated Caroline.”
“Why?”
“She was jealous.”
“Of Ethan?”
Charles laughed bitterly.
“No.”
“Of what?”
“Caroline knew exactly who Nora was.”
Ethan frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Charles looked toward the observation window.

Then said:
“Nora used a different name before you met her.”
