Chapter 9 - The Awakening in the Safehouse

Sixty-five floors below the penthouse, inside the subterranean titanium safehouse, Clara Bradley sat on the edge of a leather sofa, holding a warm cup of herbal tea. Norah was sitting on a plush rug by her feet, happily drawing a picture of a giant house with a rainbow using a box of colored pencils Dr. Thorne had provided.

The safehouse was dead silent, completely insulated from the chaos brewing on the streets above.

Clara looked up as Dr. Elena Thorne entered the living quarters, carrying a fresh set of vitals monitors.

"Elena," Clara called out, her voice laced with worry. "I can feel the slight vibration in the concrete floor. What is happening upstairs? Is Gideon in danger?"

Elena paused, a soft, knowing smile touching her lips as she set her medical tray down. "Clara, I have known Gideon Vale for over fifteen years. I have seen international cartels, corrupt governors, and multi-million-dollar assassination syndicates attempt to cross him."

She walked over and gently checked the dressing on Clara’s head wound.

"Gideon is not in danger," Elena said calmly. "The men who came to this building are the ones in danger. Gideon didn't build this organization by being reckless; he built it by being five steps ahead of every predator in the world."

Clara looked down at Norah, who was currently humming a cheerful holiday tune while coloring a bright yellow sun above the drawing of the house.

"When I was running through the snow yesterday," Clara whispered, her eyes clouding with the memory, "I thought there was no goodness left in this city. I thought men like Marcus Sterling had bought every soul from City Hall to the lakefront. I never imagined that the most dangerous man in Chicago would be the one to show us mercy."

"Gideon isn't a monster, Clara," Elena said softly. "He was a loving husband and an incredible father. When he lost Juniper and Sarah three years ago, he locked his heart away because the pain of living in an empty world was too much to bear. But last night... when he carried Norah into this building wrapped in his coat, I saw something in his eyes I haven't seen in three years."

"What?" Clara asked.

"Hope," Elena answered. "Norah didn't just survive on that bench, Clara. She brought Gideon Vale back to life."

At that moment, Norah held up her finished drawing with a triumphant grin. "Look, Mama! Look what I drew!"

Clara took the sheet of paper. On it was a crude but beautiful crayon illustration of four figures standing hand-in-hand beneath a giant Christmas tree: Clara, Norah holding Barnaby, a tall man in a dark suit with black hair labeled Mr. Gideon, and a tiny angel with golden wings smiling down from the clouds labeled Juniper.

Tears filled Clara’s eyes as she pulled her daughter tight against her heart. "It's beautiful, Norah. It's the most beautiful picture in the world."

May you like

"Do you think Mr. Gideon will like it?" Norah asked, looking up with wide, hopeful eyes.

"I know he will, sweetheart," Clara whispered, kissing her forehead. "I know he will."
