Chapter 8 - Code Black at County General

While the main strike force of Sterling’s mercenaries was mobilizing toward the Vale Tower, Sterling had initiated a simultaneous, desperate diversion across town at County General Hospital, unaware that Clara had already been evacuated hours prior.

At 8:45 AM, three blacked-out commercial vans swarmed the ambulance bay of County General. A dozen heavily armed operatives dressed in tactical paramilitary gear and ballistic masks breached the hospital's rear entrance, cutting the facility’s emergency power grid and triggering a catastrophic Code Black lockdown.

"Move! Move! Third floor, Neuro-ICU!" the mercenary squad leader barked through his tactical headset as they stormed up the stairwells, their suppressed carbines raised in high-ready positions. "Locate the Jane Doe in Room 314! Double-tap the target, wipe the local server drives, and extract within three minutes!"

The strike team kicked open the heavy double doors of the third-floor intensive care unit, their boots pounding against the linoleum. Alarms blared through the darkened hallways, illuminated only by the pulsing red emergency backup lights.

They stacked up outside Room 314. The point man slammed his boot into the door, splintering the frame, and the team flooded the room with weapons raised.

"Clear left! Clear right!"

The room was completely empty.

The hospital bed was stripped bare. The telemetry monitors had been disconnected.

In the center of the empty mattress sat a single, white card embossed with the gold crest of the Vale Syndicate.

The mercenary team leader stepped forward, his brow furrowing beneath his ballistic goggles. He lowered his weapon and picked up the card. Written on the heavy cardstock in pristine, elegant cursive was a single sentence:

“You are looking in the wrong place. And you are already dead.”

Before the squad leader could scream an order to retreat, the ceiling ventilation grates above them shattered.

Flashbang canisters dropped into the room, detonating with deafening, disorienting brilliance.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Through the blinding smoke, four operatives from Vale’s Strike Team Delta dropped silently from the overhead catwalks, clad in full tactical gear and night-vision optics. With terrifying, surgical efficiency, the Vale operatives engaged the disoriented mercenaries.

Within ninety seconds, the entire breach team was neutralized without a single shot fired by the enemy.

Captain Miller stepped through the shattered doorway, stepping over the groaning, zip-tied mercenaries on the floor. He pressed his tactical radio headset.

"Mr. Vale, this is Miller. The hospital diversion has been completely neutralized. Sterling sent twelve men into Room 314. All twelve are in our custody. The hospital staff and real patients are entirely secure."

Through the radio, my voice answered with calm, chilling certainty:

"Excellent work, Miller. Hand them over to the FBI tactical units waiting outside the perimeter. Sterling has committed an act of domestic terrorism on live television. Now, he has nowhere left to run."

"What is your status at the tower, sir?" Miller asked.

"The main force has just arrived at our gates," I replied calmly. "Tell your men to stay at the hospital. Dante and I will receive our guests personally."
