Chapter 13 - The Gala of Reckoning

One week later, on New Year’s Eve, the city of Chicago hosted its annual Grand Unity Gala at the historic Chicago Cultural Center beneath the world’s largest stained-glass Tiffany dome.

It was the most anticipated social event of the decade. The entire room was packed with hundreds of the city's most prominent philanthropists, judges, civic leaders, and honest business titans, all celebrating the dawn of a new, clean era for Chicago following the collapse of the Sterling corruption ring.

When the grand double doors of the ballroom opened, a hush fell over the crowd.

I stepped into the ballroom, dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo. On my arm was Clara Bradley, looking breathtakingly stunning in an elegant emerald-green silk evening gown that accentuated her grace and beauty, her brown hair styled in soft, cascading waves that masked the small, healing scar near her hairline.

Walking proudly between us, holding both of our hands, was Norah. She wore a lovely navy-blue velvet dress with a white lace collar, and in her small hand, held securely by its freshly repaired ear—now stitched with immaculate golden thread—was Barnaby.

The room erupted into spontaneous, thunderous applause.

The Mayor of Chicago stepped down from the podium, walking across the marble floor to greet us personally, extending his hand with profound respect.

"Mr. Vale," the Mayor said, his voice carrying through the quieted room. "Miss Bradley. On behalf of the entire city of Chicago, we owe you a debt of gratitude that can never truly be repaid. You stood against the darkness when everyone else looked away."

"The darkness only wins when good people surrender, Mr. Mayor," Clara spoke with poise, her voice ringing clear and strong. "We didn't surrender."

"And Chicago will never forget it," the Mayor smiled, looking down at Norah. "And who is this brave young lady?"

"I'm Norah," she replied proudly, holding up her stuffed rabbit. "And this is Barnaby. He's a superhero."

The entire ballroom broke into warm, affectionate laughter.

As the orchestra began to play a sweeping waltz beneath the glowing stained glass, Clara turned to me, her hazel eyes glistening with emotion.

"Would you dance with me, Mr. Vale?" she asked softly, a radiant smile touching her lips.

I looked into her eyes, feeling a warmth and peace in my soul that I had thought was lost forever.

"It would be my greatest honor, Miss Bradley," I replied.

I took her hand, leading her gracefully onto the dance floor. As we turned together beneath the golden lights, Norah stood by the edge of the floor, clapping her hands in delight while Dante stood guard beside her, handing her a glass of sparkling apple cider with a gentle, protective smile.

For the first time in three years, the shadows of the past were gone.
