Chapter 15 - The Sun Over Long Island Sound: A Promised Future and Never Again Broken

At sunset, the sky over Long Island Sound exploded into brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.

A long dining table was set out on the bluffs overlooking the sparkling ocean.

Seated around the table were the people who mattered: Mila, laughing brightly as she served her famous warm cinnamon brioche; Oswald, who had retired from the Hawthorne house and now managed the Kovac estate with a joyful smile; and Theodore, who had arrived as a dear family friend, bringing gifts of fresh flowers and books for Mila’s culinary school.

Nadia stood near the edge of the stone railing, watching the gentle waves roll onto the shore.

Dragan walked up beside her, holding two glasses of sparkling cider.

He handed one to her, his gaze lingering on her peaceful expression.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked softly.

Nadia took a sip, looking out toward the endless horizon where the ocean met the sky.

“I spent seven years believing that being invisible was the only way to survive,” she said, her voice filled with quiet wonder. “I thought if I didn't make a sound, if I accepted every humiliation, the world would leave me and Mila in peace.”

She turned to face Dragan, her eyes shining with absolute clarity and strength.

“Now I know that silence doesn't protect you. Courage does. And having someone who stands beside you makes all the difference.”

Dragan set his glass down on the stone ledge.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.

He opened it beneath the setting sun.

Inside rested a ring made of platinum, set with a flawless, brilliant-cut ocean-blue sapphire—symbolizing loyalty, endurance, and a love forged in the fires of adversity.

Dragan took her hand, his scarred fingers trembling ever so slightly with genuine emotion.

“Nadia Voskin,” Dragan said, his voice carrying the sacred weight of a vow that would never be broken. “You survived the storm. You rebuilt everything from the ashes. I don’t want to just protect you. I want to build a life beside you. Will you marry me?”

Nadia felt tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spill over her lashes.

She looked over at the table, where Mila was clapping her hands with pure joy, signing “Yes! Say yes!” across the lawn.

Nadia looked back into the eyes of the man who had walked through the freezing sleet to lift her from the mud.

“Yes,” Nadia whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. “Yes, Dragan. A thousand times, yes.”

Dragan lifted her off her feet, spinning her beneath the golden evening sky, as the sound of Mila’s laughter and the gentle ocean breeze filled the air with the sweet, unbreakable promise of tomorrow.
