Chapter 11 - The Gala of Traitors: When the High Society Mask Shatters

Within forty-eight hours, the East Coast elite was rocked by the biggest scandal in a decade.
Every major news network and social media platform was plastered with headlines:
KIND BEAUTY FOUNDER CLARISSA MERRILL INDICTED FOR MASSIVE TOXIC FRAUD & ARSON CONSPIRACY.
THEODORE HAWTHORNE TERMINATES ENGAGEMENT, EXPELS SOCIALITE FROM FAMILY ESTATE.
Clarissa had been released on a five-million-dollar bail, funded by the remaining corrupt remnants of her father’s syndicate. In a desperate, deranged bid to save her social standing, she attempted to host a private press conference and charity gala at the exclusive Manhattan Starlight Club, claiming she was the victim of corporate sabotage.
The ballroom was packed with journalists, paparazzi, and nervous investors.
Clarissa stood at the podium in a dazzling red designer gown, her face painted with heavy foundation to hide the dark circles of sleepless panic.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Clarissa spoke into the microphones, forcing a brave smile. “These allegations are completely fabricated by competitor syndicates seeking to destroy an independent, female-led empire. Kind Beauty has always operated with love, ethics, and purity!”
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom were thrown open.
The flashes of hundreds of cameras exploded instantly.
Walking into the ballroom was Dragan Kovac.
Dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue three-piece suit, his presence silenced the room of four hundred people within three seconds.
And beside him, walking with her head held high, was Nadia Voskin.
The entire crowd gasped.
Nadia wore a breathtaking emerald-silk evening gown tailored to perfection. Her short chestnut hair was styled with modern, regal elegance, framing her delicate jaw and stunning green eyes. Around her neck rested a simple, antique silver pendant—her mother’s original pendant, which Dragan’s men had recovered from the ashes of the old warehouse archives.
She did not look like a maid.
She looked like a queen stepping forward to claim her throne.
Clarissa’s voice died in her throat. Her knuckles turned white against the wooden podium. “You... what are you doing here? Guards! Remove them!”
None of the security guards moved.
In fact, the security team in the room had already been replaced by Dragan’s men an hour ago.
Theodore Hawthorne stepped out from behind Dragan, carrying a thick legal binder.
Theodore approached the stage, took the second microphone, and looked out at the press corps.
“I am Theodore Hawthorne,” his voice echoed across the room. “And I stand before you tonight to formally revoke all Hawthorne investments from Kind Beauty, to turn over all family records regarding the 2014 textile fire to federal prosecutors, and to publicly apologize to Nadia and Mila Voskin for the years of blindness my family suffered.”
Theodore turned toward Clarissa.

He pulled the six-carat diamond engagement ring out of his pocket and dropped it onto the floor at Clarissa’s feet.
“You are finished, Clarissa.”
