Chapter 12 - Theodore’s Awakening: The Engagement Ring Thrown into the Sound

The flashbulbs erupted in a frenzied storm of light.

Reporters shouted questions over one another:

“Miss Merrill, did your father order the doors locked during the factory fire?”

“Mr. Hawthorne, will you testify against her in federal court?”

“Miss Voskin, is it true you were framed for theft inside the manor?”

Clarissa covered her face with her hands, screaming in incoherent rage as federal marshals in windbreakers pushed through the crowd toward the stage.

“Clarissa Hawthorne Merrill,” the lead agent announced, flashing his badge. “Your bail has been revoked due to flight risk and witness tampering. Put your hands behind your back.”

The handcuffs clicked around her manicured wrists.

As they dragged her off the stage in front of every major camera in New York, Clarissa caught sight of Nadia standing beside Dragan.

Nadia did not mock her.

Nadia did not laugh.

She simply looked at Clarissa with calm, unshakeable pity.

Clarissa had believed that wealth made her invincible and that cruelty made her strong. But in the end, her empire of lies had collapsed under the weight of a single maid’s truth.

Later that evening, on the cold terrace overlooking the Manhattan skyline, Theodore approached Dragan and Nadia.

Theodore looked tired, but the heavy fog of guilt that had hung over him for years seemed to have finally lifted.

He looked at Nadia, bowing his head in deep humility.

“Nadia,” Theodore said softly. “There are no words I can ever say to make up for the way you were treated under my roof. My father failed your mother. I failed you. I allowed a monster into my home and almost let her destroy you.”

Nadia looked at the man who had, despite his flaws, saved Mila’s hearing years ago.

“You paid for my sister’s surgery when you didn’t have to, Mr. Hawthorne,” Nadia said gently. “I have never forgotten that. We all make mistakes about who we trust. What matters is what you do when the truth is revealed.”

Theodore smiled through unshed tears. “I have established a ten-million-dollar trust in your mother’s name to fund medical care and vocational training for working-class families across the industrial district. And the ownership deed to the bakery where Mila works has been transferred entirely into her name.”

Nadia’s eyes filled with tears of gratitude. “Thank you, Theodore.”

Theodore looked at Dragan Kovac, nodding with profound respect.

“Take care of her, Dragan,” Theodore said. “She has a stronger heart than anyone I’ve ever known.”

Dragan placed a gentle hand on the small of Nadia’s back.

“She will never need to fight alone again,” Dragan said.
