Chapter 9 - BLOOD IN THE HALLWAYS

The second-floor corridor was a war zone.

Smoke billowed from the ceiling where a smoke grenade had been tossed near the elevator banks. Glass from the shattered stained-glass windows rained down like glittering diamonds over the carpet.

Rafe moved like a ghost through the smoke, his Beretta spitting fire twice. Two men in black tactical gear dropped silently to the floor, their assault rifles clattering against the marble.

Nell stayed six paces behind him, her small revolver held in a two-handed grip, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped drum.

"Left flank!" she shouted over the roar of gunfire, seeing a shadow detach itself from behind a marble pillar with a submachine gun raised.

Rafe spun on his heel and fired before the man could pull the trigger. The mercenary crumpled, sliding down the pillar leaving a long smear of dark blood.

"Good catch," Rafe muttered without looking back. "Keep moving toward the armory."

They fought their way down the grand staircase, stepping over broken furniture and fallen bodies. The luxury of the estate had vanished, replaced by the raw, brutal reality of a mafia war.

At the bottom of the stairs, waiting by the main double doors, stood Teddy Vain.

He wasn't wearing a tuxedo now. He wore a bulletproof vest over a black tactical turtleneck, and in his right hand, he held a heavy Sig Sauer pistol aimed directly at the center of Rafe's chest.

"Well, well, well," Teddy laughed, his voice echoing off the high ceiling. "The great Rafael Santoro, brought down by his own charity. You should have thrown the maid out when you had the chance, Rafe."

Rafe stopped ten feet away, his pistol held steady at his side. He didn't look worried. He looked like a cat watching a cornered rat.

"You brought twenty men into my house, Teddy," Rafe said softly. "And none of them are walking out."

"I don't need them to walk out," Teddy sneered, shifting his aim slightly toward Nell, who stood half-hidden behind Rafe's shoulder. "I just need the girl and the locket. My father wants his ledger back, and I want the satisfaction of watching the Santoro empire burn to the ground."

May you like

Teddy’s finger tightened on the trigger.
