Chapter 12 - SHADOWS AND SUNLIGHT

The transition from the underground vault back to Ravenscliffe felt like stepping out of a tomb into the living world.

The estate had been repaired. The broken stained-glass window in the grand foyer was replaced with clear, leaded glass that let the afternoon sun flood the marble floors in golden bars of light.

Bernadette Croll met them at the front doors, holding a silver tray with two cups of steaming black coffee.

She looked at Nell—not in the cold, dismissive way she had looked at the new maid weeks ago, but with a deep, silent respect.

"Welcome back, Miss Whitaker," Bernadette said, bowing her head slightly before turning away without another word.

Nell took a cup of coffee from the tray, blowing gently across the surface as she walked out onto the stone terrace overlooking the harbor.

The water sparkled under the autumn sun, dotted with white sails and gulls wheeling through the salt air.

Footsteps sounded behind her. Rafe joined her at the stone balustrade, resting his forearms on the cold granite.

"The Vain assets have been seized by the federal government," Rafe said, looking out toward the horizon. "The construction contracts on the south side are being handed over to independent family trusts. Those forty families will have their homes before winter."

"And the people who helped the Vains?" Nell asked, sipping her coffee.

"Indicted, arrested, or retired to foreign countries where extradition treaties don't exist," Rafe replied flatly. "Boston is going to be a very quiet city for a long, long time."

Nell turned her head to look at him. The harsh, terrifying mafia boss she had met in the dark storage room months ago was gone, replaced by a man who carried the heavy burden of a kingdom built on blood and steel—yet somehow managed to stand tall in the light.

"Why did you really keep me here, Rafe?" she asked softly, using his first name for the first time without a title.

Rafe turned his head, his gray eyes locking onto hers with a intensity that made her breath hitch.

"Because the first time I saw you standing in the dark with a broken arm, refusing to cry, refusing to break..." He reached out, his warm fingers brushing against the bandage on her wrist, which was finally healing. "I knew you were the only person in this city who was stronger than the world that tried to crush you."

He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest.

May you like

"And because," Rafe added, his voice dropping to a low, rough whisper, "I didn't want you to ever have to fight alone again."
