Chapter 9 - Desperation and the Audacity of a Beggar

The moment Darius invoked our son, the temperature in the boardroom dropped below freezing.

I stood up slowly. The sheer presence of my authority filled the room with such suffocating intensity that Darius shrank back into his seat, trembling.

“Do not dare speak of my son,” I said, each word hitting him like a hammer blow. “For three years, you have paid precisely $180 a month in state-minimum child support—a court-ordered pittance that you complained about every single billing cycle. You have never sent a birthday card. You have never sent a Christmas gift. You have never once called to ask if he was healthy, if he was laughing, or if he was safe.”

“I… I wanted to reach out!” Darius stammered desperately, grasping at straws. “Jasmine wouldn't let me! She threatened to leave if I involved my past! Claire, I’m his father! He has my blood! He deserves to have his father in his life—and as the heir to the Vance empire, he needs a strong male role model!”

I let out a soft, sharp laugh that cut through his pathetic excuses.

“You are not a role model, Darius. You are a parasite who abandoned his pregnant wife because her swollen belly offended your delicate vanity. You didn't want a son when you thought he was the child of a broke housewife. But the moment you realize he is the sole heir to a nine-figure fortune, you suddenly develop fatherly instincts?”

“Claire, please…” Darius sobbed, openly weeping now, his polished executive facade completely shattered. “I have nothing left! The bank is repossessing our apartment! Jasmine is threatening to divorce me! I have over $300,000 in personal debt! If I don't get this job, I will be living on the streets! For the sake of what we once had… give me a chance! Even an entry-level position! Anything!”

“Three years ago, you asked me what I brought to the table,” I said, looking down at him with utter detachment. “Today, you are kneeling before my table, begging for scraps.”

I turned to Arthur Pendelton. “Arthur, call security. Have Mr. Ellis escorted off the premises immediately. If he ever steps foot on any Vance property again, file an immediate restraining order for corporate harassment.”

“No! Claire! Please!” Darius wailed as two burly security guards in dark suits entered the boardroom, grabbing him firmly by the arms and hauling him to his feet. “You can't do this! I am Leo’s father! I have rights! I’ll take you to court! I’ll sue for full custody!”

“Try it,” I whispered coldly. “My legal team will tie you up in court until you don't have enough money to buy a loaf of bread. Get him out of my sight.”

Darius was dragged out of the boardroom, his frantic screams echoing down the marble hallway before being cut off by the closing elevator doors.

I took a deep, steady breath, straightened my blazer, and looked at Marcus.

“Let’s review the candidate from Atlanta,” I said calmly. “We have an empire to run.”
