Chapter 4 - The Downfall Darius Never Saw Coming

While Vance Group rose to unprecedented heights, Darius Ellis’s life was quietly unravelling beneath the veneer of manufactured prestige.

Following our divorce, Darius had married Jasmine in an extravagant ceremony at a luxury golf resort—an event funded entirely through high-interest credit lines and maxed-out loans, driven by Jasmine’s obsession with social status. Jasmine had demanded a five-bedroom suburban mansion, a brand-new luxury SUV, and high-end designer wardrobes to maintain appearances among their upper-middle-class social circle.

Darius, desperate to prove that he was an elite corporate player, had taken massive financial risks at his workplace, Apex Logistics. He had convinced his executives to adopt an aggressive, corner-cutting supply strategy that he claimed would double their quarterly revenues.

Instead, the strategy was a catastrophic failure.

In the spring of my third year as CEO, Apex Logistics suffered a devastating supply chain collapse. Shipments were delayed for weeks, perishable goods spoiled in transit, and several major clients filed multi-million-dollar breach-of-contract lawsuits. An internal audit revealed that Darius had intentionally falsified delivery timeline projections to inflate his annual bonus.

Within forty-eight hours, Apex Logistics terminated Darius Ellis with immediate effect. They withheld his severance, revoked his company stock options, and blacklisted him across several regional freight consortiums.

To make matters worse, Jasmine’s lavish spending had drained what little savings Darius had left. When the eviction notices for their leased mansion began arriving and the luxury SUV was repossessed from their driveway, the toxic cracks in their marriage erupted into full-scale war.

“You promised me a lifestyle, Darius!” Jasmine screamed during one of their explosive arguments in their cramped, temporary rental apartment. “You said you were going to be a Senior Partner! Now you’re an unemployed fraud with mountains of debt!”

“I built my career while carrying you!” Darius fired back, slamming his fist onto the laminate table. “If you hadn't demanded a $60,000 wedding and designer bags every month, we wouldn't be staring at bankruptcy!”

“You’re pathetic,” Jasmine sneered, tossing a stack of past-due bills at his chest. “If you don't find an executive position within thirty days, I’m taking what’s left of my assets and filing for divorce. I didn't leave my career path to live in a glorified motel with a loser.”

Darius was suffocating. Every major logistics firm in the Midwest had closed their doors in his face. His professional reputation was in tatters, his credit score was ruined, and his pride was bleeding.

Then, one rainy Tuesday evening, Darius stumbled upon an exclusive job posting on an executive recruiting portal:

Position: Executive Vice President of Global Logistics & Supply Strategy

Company: Vance Group International

Compensation: $450,000 Base Salary + Equity Incentives + Full Executive Benefits

Darius’s eyes widened with manic excitement. Vance Group was the undisputed crown jewel of the Midwest industrial sector. Securing this position would not only save him from total financial ruin—it would catapult him to the highest echelons of corporate prestige. It was the ultimate lifeline.

Without hesitation, Darius polished his résumé, carefully masking his termination at Apex Logistics with inflated consulting credentials, and submitted his application.

He sat back in his chair, a smug grin returning to his face. “Vance Group,” he muttered to himself. “This is where I belong. Finally, a company worthy of my talent.”

He had no idea whose desk his résumé was destined to land on.
