Chapter 11 - The Audit and the Collapse of Their House of Cards

The legal fallout from the Vance Group investigation hit Darius and Jasmine like an unstoppable avalanche.
Within two weeks of Jasmine’s arrest in the Vance Tower lobby, the Franklin County District Attorney’s office launched a full-scale criminal probe into Apex Logistics’ fraudulent accounting practices. With Vance Group providing complete forensic documentation, the authorities uncovered a trail of systematic embezzlement, falsified shipping logs, and corporate tax evasion orchestrated by Darius Ellis and Jasmine Carter.
The consequences were swift, brutal, and absolute.
All of Darius’s personal bank accounts were frozen by federal court order. The luxury leased vehicles were seized and towed away in broad daylight. The landlord of their suburban rental unit executed an immediate emergency eviction order, dumping their remaining designer clothes, unpaid luxury electronics, and imported furniture onto the rain-soaked sidewalk.
Jasmine, facing multiple counts of grand larceny and corporate fraud, turned completely on Darius. In a desperate bid to secure a plea bargain, she signed a comprehensive sworn confession pinning the entire embezzlement scheme on him.
“He forced me to sign the invoices!” Jasmine wept during her preliminary hearing, pointing a trembling finger at Darius across the courtroom. “He promised me a life of luxury and told me he had everything under control! He’s a manipulator and a fraud!”
Darius sat at the defense table, wearing a faded, wrinkled suit provided by a public defender. He stared at the woman for whom he had abandoned his pregnant wife, listening to her tear his life into shreds without a shred of loyalty.
The judge slammed the gavel down with unyielding finality.
Jasmine Carter was sentenced to three years in a state correctional facility, with an order of full financial restitution. Darius Ellis was sentenced to eighteen months in county jail for corporate fraud and perjury, followed by five years of strict probation and a permanent revocation of his commercial logistics license.
As the bailiffs clamped the cold steel handcuffs around Darius’s wrists, he looked out across the gallery.
There was no one there for him. No friends, no colleagues, no admiring socialites.
He was entirely, utterly alone.

As he was led down the holding tunnel toward the transport van, Darius remembered the words he had spoken to Claire on the courthouse steps three years earlier: “A man in my position needs a partner who elevates him, not a burden who brings nothing to the table.”
Now, sitting in a windowless holding cell with nothing to his name but an orange jumpsuit and mountain of debt, Darius Ellis finally understood what it meant to have nothing.
