Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Whitmores

By 11:30 PM, the quiet luxury of the Lake Forest estate was shattered by the arrival of six black federal SUVs and four local police cruisers, their red and blue lights flashing against the pine trees.
Senator Whitmore was led out through his own front door in silver handcuffs, flanked by two Federal Bureau of Investigation agents. His face was covered by his suit jacket to shield him from the flashing cameras of the news crews that had rushed to the perimeter gates.
Behind him, Clara was loaded into an ambulance under armed guard, her white dress ruined, weeping hysterically as reporters shouted questions through the iron fence.
Inside the back seat of the Maybach parked down the street, Lena watched the scene unfold on a small monitor.
Arthur Vance sat beside her, typing rapidly on his secure laptop.
"Every server drive she retrieved contained complete digital ledgers," Arthur declared with satisfaction. "Fifteen years of extortion, human trafficking, and illegal weapons distribution through the Chicago docks. The Whitmore family is finished. Leon Mercer will spend the rest of his natural life in a maximum-security federal prison."
The rear door opened, and Victor stepped into the vehicle, brushing a speck of dust from his sleeve.
"Is it done?" Arthur asked.
"The federal prosecutor has everything," Victor replied, leaning back against the leather seat. He looked over at Lena, who was staring out the window at the flashing police lights.
The car pulled away from the curb, gliding smoothly into the dark winter night.
"You performed brilliantly tonight, Lena," Victor said softly.
"I was terrified," Lena admitted, looking down at her hands. "Every second."
"Courage isn't the absence of fear," Victor said, reaching over to place his hand over hers. "It's doing what needs to be done while your hands are shaking."
He pulled a thick white envelope from his inner jacket pocket and placed it in her lap.
"What is this?" Lena asked.
"A contract," Victor said. "My corporate foundation needs a new Chief Director of Security Auditing. Someone who notices the smallest details that everyone else misses. Someone who can't be bought, threatened, or fooled."
Lena opened the envelope. Inside was an official employment agreement with an annual salary of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, full health coverage for her entire family, and a private trust fund established for her brother Daniel’s education.

Lena stared at the numbers, her throat tight with emotion. "I... I don't know what to say."
"Say yes," Victor smiled gently.
