Chapter 4 - The Transformation

At 8:00 AM, the master suite of the Romano Tower turned into an operational staging area.

Two high-end stylists, sworn to secrecy under penalty of swift retribution from Dmitri, arrived with rolling racks of designer gowns, diamond jewelry cases, and makeup kits.

Lena stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror, barely recognizing the woman looking back at her. The tired girl in the oversized, bleach-stained maid vest was gone. In her place stood a striking figure draped in a emerald-green silk evening gown that hugged her frame and flowed down to the floor like liquid velvet. Her dark hair was swept up into an intricate, elegant chignon, secured with platinum pins, and a three-carat diamond pendant rested against her collarbone.

Dmitri stood near the doorway, holding a tactical briefing folder.

"Her posture is too defensive," Dmitri remarked bluntly, watching Lena fidget with her dress hem. "She looks like someone waiting to be scolded by a floor manager."

Victor stepped out of his dressing room, wearing a bespoke charcoal suit with a black silk tie. He walked up behind Lena, resting his large hands lightly on her shoulders as they both looked into the mirror.

"Dmitri is right," Victor said softly, his voice low in her ear. "Drop your shoulders, Lena. Chin up. In my world, weakness isn't punished by an angry boss—it’s exploited by predators."

"I don't belong in this dress, Mr. Romano," Lena whispered, her hands trembling slightly against the emerald silk. "I’m a laundry maid from South Chicago. I don't know how to act around senators and syndicate leaders."

"You belong wherever you decide to stand," Victor countered firmly, turning her around to face him. "Tonight, you are not Lena Hart the maid. You are Elena Vance—Arthur’s niece, a private wealth consultant visiting from Zurich. You speak only when spoken to, you keep your expression cool, and you let me control the room."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a thin, skin-colored earpiece, sliding it carefully into her right ear.

"This is linked directly to my channel and Dmitri’s surveillance van outside the Whitmore estate," Victor explained. "Inside that house, Clara will have armed guards at every doorway. Leon Mercer will likely be hiding in the third-floor study, waiting for his forged passport from Senator Whitmore."

"What is my job?" Lena asked, lifting her chin.

Victor handed her a small, sleek evening clutch made of black leather. Inside rested a tiny, high-frequency digital cloning scanner no larger than a lipstick tube.

"Your job," Victor said, "is to get close enough to Clara Whitmore to clone the security encryption key on her wrist charm. She uses it to access her father's private server room in the basement."

"And if she recognizes me?"

Victor’s eyes burned with an icy, unyielding intensity. "Then we burn the house down with everyone inside it."
