Chapter 5 - The Lake Forest Estate

The Whitmore mansion in Lake Forest was a sprawling limestone estate surrounded by ten acres of pine forest and twelve-foot wrought-iron security gates. Rain slicked the long cobblestone driveway as a line of dark luxury sedans moved toward the grand entrance.

Inside Victor’s armored Maybach, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Victor checked the silver cuff links at his wrists while Dmitri monitored police scanner frequencies on a tablet.

"Senator Whitmore has twelve private security operatives on the grounds," Dmitri reported from the front seat. "All former military. They’ve swept the perimeter twice. If things go bad inside, we have four minutes before local law enforcement arrives."

"They won't arrive," Victor said calmly. "The chief of police is currently dining at table four."

The car came to a smooth stop beneath the estate’s porte-cochère. A valet opened the door, and Victor stepped out, turning to extend his hand to Lena.

Lena took his hand. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but as she stepped onto the red carpet, she remembered her mother’s peaceful face in the hospital bed and her brother’s safe smile. She drew in a deep breath, dropped her shoulders, and lifted her chin high.

They stepped through the massive carved oak doors into a grand foyer filled with jazz music, roaring fireplaces, and laughing guests holding champagne flutes.

At the center of the room stood Senator Whitmore—a silver-haired man with a calculating smile—talking to a group of federal judges. Standing beside him, wearing a white ice-silk gown, was Clara Whitmore.

As Victor and Lena crossed the marble floor, the conversations around them withered away into hushed, shocked whispers.

Clara turned, her smile freezing mid-sentence. Her eyes widened in absolute terror as her gaze moved from Victor’s face—bruised but very much alive—to the stunning woman in the emerald dress standing at his arm.

"Victor..." Senator Whitmore stammered, stepping forward with a forced, sweating smile. "We... we were told you were at the hospital recovering from the dreadful attack yesterday!"

"Reports of my incapacitation were greatly exaggerated, Senator," Victor said smoothly, his hand resting securely on the small of Lena’s back. "I couldn't miss your celebration. Allow me to introduce my guest, Elena Vance."

Clara stared at Lena, her chest heaving as panic seized her throat. She recognized the eyes. The cheekbones. The woman she had watched being pinned to a marble pillar six hours ago was now holding a glass of wine in her father's ballroom.

"You..." Clara whispered, her voice trembling.

"Good evening, Miss Whitmore," Lena said, her voice smooth, icy, and perfectly composed. "It’s a pleasure to finally meet you without a tray in my hands."
