Chapter 7 - The Secret Ledger Hidden in the Old Victorian Attic on Barrington Hill

Corbin knew that corporate documents alone might not be enough to overcome the battalion of defense lawyers Richard and Vance could mobilize. He needed an independent financial smoking gun—the physical offshore bank records connecting the stolen patent royalties to Vance’s private dummy accounts.
Before leaving the corporate vault, Corbin discovered a notation on a routing slip inside the 2020 file: “Physical escrow records maintained at Barrington Hill Archive.”
Barrington Hill was the historic Victorian carriage house once owned by Corbin’s grandfather, currently used by Uncle Richard as a private weekend retreat and off-the-books storage facility.
Corbin drove thirty minutes east through the driving rain toward Barrington. The estate was dark, surrounded by towering oak trees and an iron gate. Using his grandfather’s master skeleton key—which he had kept on his keyring since childhood—Corbin unlocked the side pedestrian gate and navigated the dark gravel pathway to the carriage house.
He climbed the narrow wooden staircase to the dusty third-floor attic.
The attic was filled with forgotten oil paintings, antique furniture, and rows of brass-bound wooden trunks from the company’s founding era. In the far corner, behind a stack of antique architectural drafting tables, stood an old floor-standing Mosler safe from the 1950s.
Corbin knew the combination. His grandfather had used the same six-digit sequence for every family safe: the founding date of Stanford Development.
He dialed the heavy brass wheel: 0 - 4 - 1 - 2 - 6 - 4.
A heavy mechanical clunk echoed through the attic. The safe handle turned.
Corbin pulled open the thick door. Inside, stacked in pristine legal binders, was the complete paper trail of Richard Stanford and Arthur Vance’s shadow empire:
The Zurich Escrow Ledger: Proof that forty-two million dollars in international licensing fees for the Prescott Structural Damping Grid had been funneled through a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under the names Vance Asset Management and RS Holdings.
The Harborview Settlement Kickback: Canceled cashier's checks showing three million dollars transferred directly from the steel fabrication contractor into Richard Stanford’s personal brokerage accounts.
The Private Investigator’s Dossier on Lianna Prescott: Surveillance photographs of Lianna leaving her apartment, holding baby Austin at the health clinic, and working at Corbin’s estate. Vance had been tracking her every movement to ensure she never found stable financial footing to hire an attorney.
Corbin felt sick to his stomach. His own uncle had orchestrated a systematic campaign of psychological and economic starvation against a widowed mother and an infant child, all to protect his stolen fortune.
Corbin carefully packed the entire ledger, the canceled checks, and the surveillance files into his leather travel bag.
As he turned toward the attic staircase to leave, the floorboards below creaked.

A beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the darkness of the stairwell, sweeping across the rafters.
Corbin froze, holding his breath in the shadows behind the safe.
