Chapter 19 - The Final Verdict

The heavy wooden doors of the hospital suite burst open, and Agent Miller rushed into the room with six armed federal agents, their weapons raised.
Secure him! Miller shouted.
Two agents grabbed Marcus, slamming him against the wall and violently clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Marcus did not fight back. The fight had completely drained out of him. He looked at Annie, his eyes filled with a pathetic mixture of hatred and awe.
You think you are better than me? Marcus spat, blood trickling from a small cut on his cheek from the shattered glass. You used the old mob. You used Carlo and the syndicate to beat Vance. You are just as dirty as I am, Annie! You are a monster!
Annie walked slowly toward him, her heels clicking quietly against the floor.
She stopped inches from his face, looking at him with absolute, unbreakable corporate precision.
I am not a monster, Marcus, Annie said softly, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. I am a businesswoman. I saw a hostile force attempting a violent takeover, and I utilized independent contractors to neutralize the threat.
Marcus stared at her, completely stunned by her cold, corporate framing of a mafia ambush.
Vance signed over all of his assets to the Moretti Foundation twenty minutes ago, Annie continued smoothly. He confessed to funding your prison escape and hiring mercenaries to assassinate my grandfather. He gave the FBI everything they need to lock you away in a supermax facility for the rest of your natural life.
She leaned in slightly closer, her dark eyes staring directly into his soul.
You have no money. You have no allies. You have no family, Annie whispered. You are nothing, Marcus. You are just a ghost that I am finally exorcising.
Agent Miller stepped forward, grabbing Marcus by the collar.
Get him out of here, Miller ordered. Put him in the deepest, darkest hole you can find.
As the agents dragged Marcus out of the room, he did not scream. He did not fight. He simply stared at the floor, finally broken by the undeniable realization that the little bird had become an untouchable eagle.
The room grew quiet, save for the freezing wind blowing in through the shattered window.
Silas holstered his weapon, brushing shards of glass off his tailored suit. He looked at Annie and offered a small, proud nod.
Target neutralized, Boss, Silas said respectfully.
Annie turned away from the door and rushed over to the hospital bed. The cold, terrifying CEO mask instantly vanished, replaced by the loving, terrified granddaughter.
Grandpa! Are you okay? Did he hurt you? Annie asked frantically, checking Daniel’s bandages.
Daniel smiled warmly, reaching up to gently cup her cheek. His hand was warm and steady.
I am perfectly fine, little bird, Daniel chuckled softly. I was never in any danger. I knew you were coming.
Annie let out a long, shaky breath, tears of pure relief finally welling up in her eyes. She leaned down and hugged him tightly, burying her face in his shoulder, ignoring the broken glass on the floor.
Agent Miller watched the embrace, shaking his head in sheer disbelief.
You orchestrated a coordinated mob ambush, extorted a billionaire, and repelled a hospital assassination attempt in under four hours, Miller muttered, crossing his arms. The Director of the FBI is going to have a massive headache tomorrow.
Annie pulled back from the hug, wiping her eyes, and looked at the federal agent with a sharp, innocent smile.
I have no idea what you are talking about, Agent Miller, Annie replied smoothly. I was simply enjoying a quiet walk on the pier when Mr. Vance voluntarily decided to donate his assets to charity.
Miller stared at her for a long moment, then let out a loud, defeated laugh.
You are exactly like him, Miller said, pointing at Daniel. God help us all.
May you like
Daniel smiled proudly, leaning back against his pillows, looking at the incredible young woman standing before him.
No, Miller, Daniel corrected softly. She is much, much better.
