Chapter 10 - The Little Bird's Kingdom

Three months passed since the violent, chaotic night that completely destroyed three powerful families.
The corrupt police captain and his loyalists were rotting in federal prison, entirely stripped of their badges and their dignity.
The Rossi family had been completely dismantled, their territories seized and their leadership indicted on massive federal RICO charges.
Marcus and Sylvia Moretti were sitting in maximum-security solitary confinement, awaiting trial for murder, conspiracy, and attempted assassination.
Daniel had used his immense wealth and power to completely destroy them, leaving them with absolutely nothing.
The dark, bloody chapter of the Chicago underworld had officially been closed.
Daniel Moretti had officially stepped down as the head of the mafia syndicate, dismantling the illegal operations and turning his empire into a legitimate, multi-billion-dollar corporate enterprise.
He no longer wanted to be a feared mob boss.
He only wanted to be a grandfather.
On a bright, sunny Tuesday morning, a sleek black limousine pulled up in front of the best private school in Chicago.
The chauffeur opened the door, and Silas stepped out, wearing a sharp suit and a massive, warm smile.
He turned and offered his large hand to a beautiful little girl wearing a crisp, clean school uniform.
Annie took his hand, hopping out of the car with her canvas backpack slung over her shoulder.
She was no longer wearing the oversized, dirty blue coat, and she was no longer an invisible ghost haunting the city streets.
She was the beloved, cherished heir to the Moretti legacy.
“Have a good day at school, little bird,” Silas smiled, patting her gently on the head.
“I will be right here waiting for you at three o'clock.”
“Thanks, Silas!” Annie cheered, hugging the giant bodyguard before skipping happily toward the school entrance.
Back at the sprawling, peaceful lakefront estate, Daniel sat in a sunlit garden pavilion, pouring a cup of expensive tea.
Sitting across from him in a comfortable wheelchair was Eleanor Calehan.
She looked incredibly healthy, her cheeks rosy and her severe cough completely cured thanks to the world’s most expensive team of pulmonary specialists.
“She is going to change the world, Daniel,” Eleanor smiled, watching a video of Annie on Daniel’s tablet.
Daniel took a sip of his tea, looking out at the calm, sparkling waters of Lake Michigan.
“She already has, Margaret,” Daniel replied softly, a profound, unbreakable peace settling over his hardened soul.
“She changed my world, and she saved my life.”
The city of Chicago would forever whisper the legendary story of the terrifying mafia king who was brought to his knees by a little girl.
They would talk about the night the most powerful families were completely destroyed because a child refused to look the other way.
But Daniel didn't care about the whispers, the rumors, or the fear anymore.
He only cared about the little bird who had taught him that the greatest power in the world wasn't violence, money, or intimidation.

The greatest power in the world was simply choosing not to leave someone alone when they were hurting.
And they would never, ever be alone again.
