Chapter 15 - The Viper’s Web

While Annie was rallying the ghosts of Chicago, Victor Vance was sitting in a penthouse suite overlooking the magnificent skyline, sipping a glass of rare scotch.
Vance was a man who preferred clean hands and dirty money. He was handsome in a cold, reptilian way, wearing a bespoke suit that cost more than most people made in a year.
The penthouse doors opened, and Marcus Moretti walked in. He looked rough, older, and desperate. The prison years had not been kind to him. The arrogance was still there, but it was tainted by deep, unshakeable paranoia.
Your men failed at the gala, Marcus spat, pouring himself a drink with trembling hands. Daniel is alive.
Vance did not look up from his tablet, reading financial reports with complete indifference.
It was a miscalculation, Vance replied smoothly. My operatives underestimated the bodyguard. But it hardly matters. We sent a message. The corporate board is terrified. Stocks in Moretti Enterprise dropped six percent this morning.
Marcus downed his scotch, pacing the room like a rabid dog.
You do not understand Daniel, Marcus hissed. If he is alive, he is planning a counterattack. And that girl... Annie. She is not a normal child. She has his instincts.
Vance finally looked up, an amused, condescending smile playing on his lips.
She is a seventeen-year-old girl playing dress-up in a boardroom, Marcus. She is a non-factor. I have already initiated phase two.
Vance tapped a button on his desk, and the inner doors of the penthouse opened.
A woman walked into the room. She was thinner than she used to be, and her hair was cut short, but her eyes were just as calculating and venomous as they were ten years ago.
Marcus dropped his glass. It shattered on the expensive hardwood floor.
Sylvia? Marcus whispered, completely stunned.
Sylvia smiled, though it did not reach her cold eyes. Hello, Marcus. Prison changed you. You look pathetic.
Vance leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers together.
I used my federal connections to arrange a quiet, medical parole for your wife yesterday, Vance explained. Sylvia has something you lack, Marcus. She has subtlety.
Marcus glared at his wife, anger overriding his shock. You made a deal with him? Behind my back?
Sylvia walked to the bar, completely ignoring her husband’s outrage. She poured a glass of sparkling water.
Victor realizes that brute force is inefficient, Sylvia said smoothly. Daniel’s security is impenetrable right now. But the girl... Annie is emotional. She believes in loyalty, family, and doing the right thing. It is her greatest weakness.
Vance smiled, raising his glass in a mock toast.
Sylvia reached out to the girl this morning, Vance said. She sent an encrypted message to Annie’s personal phone. She told the girl she wants to defect. She offered to trade my shipping manifests and your location in exchange for federal immunity.
Marcus’s eyes widened in realization. It is a trap.
Of course it is a trap, Sylvia sneered. I told the little brat to meet me at Pier 44 tonight. Just the two of us. She wants to protect her grandfather, so she will come. And when she does, Victor’s men will be waiting in the shadows.
Vance stood up, buttoning his suit jacket.
Once the girl is eliminated, Daniel’s spirit will finally break, Vance stated coldly. He will fold the company, and you will inherit the ashes, Marcus. Just as we agreed.
Marcus looked out the window at the dark, sprawling city. He felt a twisted sense of victory, but deep down, a cold knot of fear remained in his stomach.

He remembered the stubborn, dark eyes of the little girl at the train station. He remembered how she had brought an empire crashing down on his head.
Just make sure she is dead, Marcus whispered. Because if she isn't, she will kill us all.
