Chapter 8 - The Secret Detective Who Never Closed The File

Detective Robert Miller was not a man who liked loose ends.

A twenty-year veteran of the city police department, Miller was the detective who had originally arrived at the hospital on the night I was burned. He had looked at the angle of my burns, looked at the smashed plastic camera on our kitchen floor, and looked at Luca’s perfectly dry, spotless shirt.

Miller had known from day one that Luca’s story was a complete fabrication. But without hard physical evidence or a victim willing to testify on the record, his hands had been tied by procedure.

That changed in mid-February, when Marcus Vance walked into Miller’s downtown office with an encrypted solid-state hard drive.

“Detective Miller,” Marcus said, placing the drive on the scarred wooden desk. “I have something you’ve been waiting four months to see.”

Miller plugged the drive into his secure workstation. As the 4K footage from the hidden grandfather clock began to play, Miller’s jaw set into concrete.

He watched Luca slam his hand into my pregnant back. He watched me scream in agony. He watched Wendy sip her coffee and instruct her son to retrieve the deed. And he listened to Luca plan the cover-up in pristine, crystal-clear audio.

Miller slowly leaned back in his chair, running a hand over his face. “Jesus Christ.”

“That’s not all,” Marcus said, dropping a six-hundred-page financial binder beside the laptop. “Here is the complete forensic audit showing motive: two point four million in Ponzi debt, an impending liquidation deadline, and an illegal land-flip contract signed before the assault took place.”

Miller looked up at Marcus, his eyes blazing with fury. “Where is Jessi?”

“She’s in a secure safe house under my protection,” Marcus said. “She gave birth to a healthy daughter. She’s ready to testify. But we want this done right, Detective. If you arrest Luca today on assault charges, his mother will post his bail in an hour, his lawyer will delay the trial for two years, and they will liquidate the firm's assets and flee to Dubai before a jury is even seated.”

Miller understood immediately. “The April 18th conservatorship hearing.”

“Exactly,” Marcus smiled. “Luca thinks he’s walking into an uncontested probate court to steal her father’s legacy. He has invited his entire inner circle, his mother, and his biggest investors to witness his victory.”

Detective Miller closed the binder with a heavy thud.

“I’ll coordinate directly with the District Attorney and Judge Callahan’s chambers,” Miller said, standing up and strapping on his sidearm holster. “We’ll seal the courtroom docket. Luca won't know what hit him until the handcuffs lock behind his back.”
