Chapter 14 - The Total Collapse Of An Empire Of Lies

“Your Honor,” the prosecutor continued, stepping forward with a second stack of documents. “We also present Exhibits B through G: certified forensic audit reports proving that the plaintiff, Luca Vance, operated a fraudulent Ponzi scheme totaling over three million dollars. We have evidence of forged probate codicils submitted to the County Registrar, and sworn affidavits detailing conspiracy to commit aggravated assault with intent to murder.”

Bradley turned to Luca, grabbed his briefcase, and whispered hurriedly, “I cannot represent you in this. You lied to me about the existence of the video.” Bradley turned to the bench: “Your Honor, I move to withdraw as counsel immediately.”

“Granted,” Judge Callahan said coldly.

Judge Callahan picked up his gavel and looked down at Luca and Wendy.

“In my forty years on the bench,” the judge stated, “I have rarely witnessed such depraved, calculated cruelty. You attempted to maim and potentially murder your heavily pregnant wife for financial profit, and then had the unmitigated audacity to walk into my courtroom to claim ownership of her father’s legacy.”

Judge Callahan slammed his gavel down.

“The petition for conservatorship is DENIED WITH PREJUDICE. The property of Thomas Vance remains the sole, unencumbered, and untouchable property of Jessi Vance and her heirs forever.”

Judge Callahan then looked at Detective Robert Miller and the armed officers standing by the doors.

“Bailiff. Detective Miller. Execute the warrants.”

Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

He walked up behind Luca, grabbed his wrists, and snapped the cuffs tightly behind his back.

“Luca Vance,” Detective Miller recited loudly, “you are under arrest for attempted manslaughter, aggravated domestic battery, grand larceny, and federal document forgery.”

Luca began to sob hysterically, his knees buckling. “Jessi! Please! Think of our baby! We can fix this! Tell them to stop!”

I didn't utter a single word. I simply adjusted Maya in her carrier and looked at him with the cold indifference he deserved.

Two female officers walked over to the gallery railing where Wendy was trying to slip out the side exit.

“Wendy Vance,” the officer said, grabbing her arms and locking her wrists in steel cuffs. “You are under arrest for felony conspiracy, accessory to assault, and witness tampering.”

“Get your filthy hands off me!” Wendy shrieked, thrashing against the officers as her expensive jewelry rattled against the handcuffs. “Do you know who my family is? Luca! Do something!”

The gallery watched in total satisfaction as Luca and Wendy were marched down the center aisle in chains, their cries echoing down the marble corridor until the heavy holding cell doors slammed shut behind them.

I stood at the defense table, feeling the steady, warm weight of my daughter sleeping peacefully against my chest.

Marcus Vance walked up beside me, placing a warm, protective hand on my shoulder.

“It’s over, Jessi,” he said softly. “You won.”
