Chapter 6 - Unmasking Luca's Secret Millions And Hidden Debt

While I spent the next four months nursing Maya and watching her grow chubby and radiant, Marcus Vance and his financial forensic team tore Luca’s life apart layer by layer.

What they uncovered was far darker and more twisted than simple marital greed.

One evening in late January, Marcus spread a massive stack of bank statements, tax returns, and offshore entity filings across the dining table of the safe house.

“Luca wasn't just broke, Jessi,” Marcus explained, tapping a red pen against a thick audit report. “He was running an elaborate affinity Ponzi scheme through his boutique wealth management firm, Aegis Capital.”

I held four-month-old Maya on my lap, burping her gently while I read the figures. “Where was the money going?”

“He was taking investments from elderly retirees in his mother’s wealthy social club, promising them eight percent guaranteed annual returns,” Marcus said. “Instead of investing it, he used their capital to pay for his luxury penthouses, his sports cars, and Wendy’s exorbitant country club lifestyle. When three major investors demanded full liquidation last autumn, he was two point four million dollars short.”

“That’s why he needed my father’s land,” I realized, my stomach churning.

“Exactly,” Marcus nodded. “The commercial developer offered three point two million in cash. Luca planned to force you to sign the deed, flip the land to the developer within forty-eight hours, pay off his loudest investors to keep them from going to the SEC, and pocket the remaining eight hundred thousand.”

“And what if I had refused, even after the burn?” I asked quietly.

Marcus looked directly into my eyes. “We pulled his computer search history from the office server via an authorized subpoena draft we’ve prepared for the grand jury. Two days before he pushed you into that pot, he spent three hours searching state probate laws regarding spousal inheritance in the event of maternal death during childbirth.”

A chill ran down my spine that made my teeth chatter.

He didn't just want to scare me into signing. If I had died from the trauma, or if the burns had caused fatal complications during labor, he would have inherited my father’s house automatically as the surviving spouse.

“He tried to kill both of us,” I whispered, hugging Maya tighter against my chest.

“Yes,” Marcus said grimly. “And his mother knew every single detail. We intercepted emails between Wendy and Luca discussing the transfer of the estate into an irrevocable trust in Belize the moment you were ‘out of the picture.’”

“What about the police report Luca filed after I left?”

“Luca filed a petition claiming you suffered severe postpartum psychosis, abandoned your home, and were mentally incompetent,” Marcus smiled coldly. “He hired a corrupt family law attorney named Bradley Vance—no relation to me—to push for an expedited court hearing to grant Luca full power of attorney over your assets and sole custody of Maya whenever you were located.”

“When is that court hearing?” I asked.

“April 18th,” Marcus replied. “Three months from now. Judge Arthur Callahan’s courtroom. Luca thinks he’s walking into an uncontested default hearing where he will be awarded legal ownership of your father’s land and an arrest warrant for you.”

I stood up, holding Maya in my arms, and walked over to the window overlooking the snowy valley.

“We won’t contest it beforehand, Marcus,” I said, my voice steady and cold. “We let him think nobody is coming. We let him invite his mother, his investors, and his high-priced lawyers.”

“And then?” Marcus asked, a knowing grin spreading across his face.

“And then, on April 18th, I walk through those courtroom doors myself.”
