Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Traitors

BANG.

A shot rang out across the courtyard.

Victoria’s gun flew from her hand, spinning into the darkness as a bullet shattered her wrist. She shrieked in agony, clutching her bloody arm and collapsing into the mud.

I stood behind the stone pillar, the smoking barrel of my pistol leveled directly at her forehead.

"Step away from him, Victoria," I said, my voice cold as ice, advancing through the rain until I stood over her.

Victoria looked up at me through the pouring rain, her face smeared with mud and mascara, weeping in pain and disbelief. "You... you miserable little secretary... you ruined everything..."

"She isn't a secretary," Julian's voice came from behind her—deep, calm, and resonant.

Julian forced himself up onto his feet, using a steel garden rail for support as the exoskeleton batteries completely died. He dragged his heavy boots across the gravel until he stood beside me, towering over his fallen sister.

"She is the future of this family," Julian said, looking down at Victoria with cold, unyielding judgment.

At that moment, the screech of tires tore through the driveway as five black town cars carrying the High Council’s internal affairs enforcement unit pulled up. Over twenty heavily armed syndicate enforcers spilled out, surrounding the remaining mercenaries and disarming them without a single shot.

Leading the enforcers was Don Salvatore, the seventy-year-old elder of the Chicago High Council.

Salvatore stepped into the courtyard, taking in the carnage, the fallen mercenaries, the captured Victoria, and Julian standing tall in the rain beside me.

"Julian," Don Salvatore said, bowing his head in deep, genuine respect. "We received the financial data your assistant transmitted to our private servers. Marcus Kane’s betrayal is fully documented. The High Council has unanimously stripped Kane and your sister of all titles, assets, and protections."

Salvatore signaled his enforcers. Two men stepped forward, hauling Victoria to her feet and clamping heavy steel restraints around her wrists.

"Julian! Please! We're blood!" Victoria wept, thrashing against the guards. "Don't let them take me to the North Territory! Julian!"

Julian didn't look at her. "You broke the blood oath when you ordered the terrace to stand silent, Victoria. You chose the lake. Now you can live with the dark."

The enforcers dragged her into the black cars, her screams swallowed by the roaring engine and the pounding rain.

Don Salvatore turned to Julian. "Marcus Kane has been secured in the docks' deep storage. He awaits your final judgment."

"I will handle Marcus myself at sunrise," Julian replied. "Clear this courtyard. The Vescari Manor is closed for the night."

"As you command, Boss," Salvatore said, bowing once more before leading his men away.

The courtyard fell into absolute, peaceful silence, save for the rhythm of the falling rain.

Julian let out a long, ragged exhale. The neural strain finally overwhelmed him, and his knees gave out completely.

I caught him instantly, wrapping my arms around his broad chest, taking his weight against mine as we sank together onto the sheltered stone steps of the portico.

"I've got you," I whispered, holding him tightly against the cold night air.

Julian leaned his head against my shoulder, his breathing ragged, his large hands wrapping around my waist. He didn't say a word for several minutes; he just held me, his heart beating strong and steady against my ribs.

"Forty minutes," he murmured into my neck, a faint, exhausted smile in his voice.

"Thirty-eight," I corrected him softly, smiling through my tears. "You had two minutes to spare."

Julian lifted his head, his silver eyes glowing with an intensity that took my breath away. He reached up, cupping my wet face in his warm, calloused hands, his thumb tracing the curve of my jawline.

"I spent twenty-six months believing I was half a man, Clara," he whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion he had kept locked away for years. "Surrounded by hundreds of people who only saw a broken boss they could exploit. But when you looked at me in that water... you didn't see a mob boss. You didn't see a cripple. You saw a man worth saving."

"You were always worth saving, Julian," I said, my voice barely a whisper.

Julian leaned in and pressed his lips against mine.

May you like

The kiss was fierce, desperate, and filled with a raw, undeniable passion that set my entire soul on fire. The taste of rain, gunpowder, and sweet salvation mingled between us as he pulled me closer, erasing every shadow of fear, debt, and loneliness that had haunted our lives.

In the heart of Chicago’s darkest underworld, surrounded by the ruins of a broken conspiracy, we found the one thing neither of us had ever believed in: absolute, unbreakable love.
