Chapter 8 - The Siege of Vescari Manor

The storm over Lake Michigan had turned into a full-blown gale by the time our armored SUV tore through the iron gates of the Vescari estate.
Flames lit up the midnight sky. The outer guard barracks were engulfed in black smoke, and the sound of heavy automatic gunfire echoed across the manicured lawns.
Marcus Kane's elite mercenary unit—over forty heavily armed fighters—had breached the outer courtyard and was currently using demolition charges against the reinforced steel doors of the manor’s central vault.
Victoria Vescari stood under the covered portico, wearing a tactical jacket over her ruined designer clothes, screaming orders into a radio.
"Blow the hinges!" Victoria shrieked. "The encryption servers are inside! If we secure the Sovereign Ledger before the police arrive, the Five Families will have no choice but to recognize us!"
"They won't recognize a corpse, Victoria," a voice thundered from the darkness of the driveway.
Victoria froze, spinning around.
Through the curtain of torrential rain and smoke, Julian stepped forward.
Every mercenary in the courtyard stopped firing. A collective gasp of pure, unadulterated horror rippled through the attackers.
To them, Julian Vescari was a paralyzed cripple who couldn't leave his chair. But standing before them in the lightning flashes was a towering titan clad in carbon-fiber battle armor, walking with steady, thunderous strides through the mud, holding an assault rifle at the ready.
"Julian?!" Victoria shrieked, stumbling backward in sheer terror. "You... you're walking?! It's a trick! Shoot him! SHOOT HIM NOW!"
The lead mercenary raised his weapon, but Julian was faster.
Julian brought his rifle up, firing three precise double-taps. Three mercenaries collapsed instantly before they could squeeze their triggers. The motorized exoskeleton whirred with superhuman speed, allowing Julian to pivot and advance like an unstoppable war machine.
I leaped from the SUV’s passenger side, taking cover behind a heavy stone pillar, firing my sidearm to suppress the right flank of snipers stationed near the garden fountain.
"Clara, cover the portico!" Julian yelled, advancing directly down the center path into a hail of gunfire.
Bullets sparked off his titanium chest armor and chipped the stone balustrades around him. Julian didn't flinch. He fired with surgical precision, dropping enemy combatants with every pull of the trigger. His years of tactical leadership and ruthless training were on full, terrifying display.
He wasn't just a boss; he was a battlefield general.
The mercenaries, seeing their weapons fail to stop the walking specter of the man they had tried to drown, broke into a panicked retreat.
"Hold your ground!" Victoria screamed, pulling a chrome revolver from her coat. "Kill him! I'll pay you ten million dollars! KILL HIM!"
A mercenary tried to flank Julian from behind a marble statue. I leaned out, lined up my sights, and put a round cleanly through his shoulder, sending him sprawling into the mud.
"Thanks, partner!" Julian called out over the roar of gunfire, his voice full of wild, lethal exhilaration.
Suddenly, the red warning light on Julian's neural sensor began to beep frantically.
Battery at 10%. Actuator overheating.
Julian’s right leg buckled with a sudden spasm of hydraulic failure. He stumbled forward, dropping to one knee in the wet gravel.
Victoria saw the opening. A twisted, triumphant grin spread across her face.

She raised her chrome revolver, aiming it straight at Julian’s unprotected head from fifteen feet away.
"Goodbye, little brother," Victoria sneered, her finger tightening on the trigger. "The empire is mine."
