Chapter 7 - Awakening in Room 404

By 11:30 PM, the Citation jet touched back down in Cedar Rapids.

The winter storm had passed, leaving the midwestern night sky crystal clear, illuminated by a brilliant, silver full moon reflecting off the fresh snow.

I didn't go home to the empty, cursed mansion on the ridge. I had my driver take me directly back to St. Luke’s Hospital. In my hand, I carried the recovered leather duffel bag containing Vivienne’s original trust documents, the forged wills, and the encrypted evidence drives.

When I entered Room 404, the scene brought an overwhelming sense of warmth to my exhausted soul.

Vivienne was fully awake, sitting propped up in bed without the oxygen cannula. Gemma was curled up on the edge of the mattress, resting her head against her mother’s hip, holding her hand while Maeve sat in the armchair beside them, peeling a fresh orange and sharing stories of Vivienne’s childhood in Chicago.

When the door opened, all three women looked up.

"Dad!" Gemma stood up, running across the room and throwing her arms around me. "Is it done? Did they catch her?"

"She’s in federal custody in Chicago right now, sweetheart," I said, hugging Gemma tightly before walking to the bedside.

I placed the leather bag on the bedside table and leaned down, wrapping my arms gently around Vivienne. She buried her face in the crook of my neck, breathing in the scent of my coat, her warm tears dampening my collar.

"You came back," she whispered, her voice stronger now, clear and full of life.

"I will always come back to you, Vivienne," I murmured, kissing her cheek, her forehead, and her soft lips. "Always."

Maeve stood up, wiping a tear from her eye with the corner of her apron. "Conrad... did you secure the Chicago trust?"

"Every single certificate, Maeve," I said, opening the bag and pulling out the original Sterling trust portfolio. I placed the thick, gold-embossed leather binder directly into Vivienne’s lap. "Sixty million dollars. Untouched, unencumbered, and legally protected by federal injunction. It belongs to you, Vivienne. It has always belonged to you."

Vivienne looked down at the massive fortune that had almost cost her her life. She ran her fingers across the embossed seal of the Sterling family, then looked up at me with those breathtaking violet-gray eyes.

"Conrad," Vivienne said softly, taking my hand and placing it over the trust documents. "I don't care about sixty million dollars. I never cared about the Sterling fortune. The only thing I care about is our family, our daughter, and the truth."

She turned her gaze toward Maeve, her eyes filling with profound, long-awaited love.

"Mother," Vivienne said, extending her other hand toward the elderly woman who had refused to leave the cemetery gates. "Come here."

Maeve stepped forward, her frail hands trembling as she took Vivienne’s fingers. For twenty years, Maeve had lived in a tiny one-bedroom apartment in Dubuque, working as a seamstress, praying every night for the baby girl she had been forced to give away. Now, standing beneath the warm hospital lights, mother and daughter held each other for the first time as true family.

"I’m never letting you go again, Mom," Vivienne wept softly, pulling Maeve down into a gentle embrace. "You saved my life today. If you hadn't fought those guards at the gate, Conrad would never have known the truth."

"You are my daughter, Vivienne," Maeve whispered, kissing Vivienne’s hair. "A mother never stops fighting for her child. Not even at the edge of the grave."

As I watched my wife, my daughter, and my new mother-in-law embrace, a quiet, unyielding resolve took root in my heart.

The criminal conspirators were in handcuffs, but the corporate reckoning was just beginning. Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, the board of directors of Pendleton Enterprises would convene for an emergency shareholder assembly.

And I was going to cleanse our family’s legacy once and for all.
