Chapter 14 - The Courtroom Reckoning and The Family Purge

(The Family We Chose)

On a warm Saturday afternoon in June, our family gathered at our new home: a beautiful, sunlit stone villa nestled on forty private acres of rolling green meadows near the Cedar River.

There were no iron gates, no surveillance cameras, and no dark secrets.

In the spacious backyard garden, surrounded by blooming white hydrangeas and fragrant lilac bushes, a long wooden dining table was set for a summer feast.

Maeve sat at the head of the table, laughing joyfully as she poured homemade iced lemonade for Gemma and Paige. Paige, completely cleared of all wrongdoing by federal prosecutors, had become the chief landscape architect for all community clinics built by our foundation, finding her true purpose and healing her fractured spirit.

Vivienne and I walked down the stone garden path, holding hands, listening to the laughter of our family echoing through the summer breeze.

Vivienne looked radiant. Her skin was warm and glowing, her violet-gray eyes shining with unburdened joy, her dark hair catching the golden afternoon sunlight.

"What are you thinking about, Conrad?" she asked, leaning her head gently against my shoulder as we stopped by the edge of the rose garden.

"I was thinking about that freezing morning in December," I murmured, wrapping my arm securely around her waist. "When the rope snapped, the box opened, and I felt your breath against my fingers."

Vivienne turned in my arms, looking up into my eyes with deep, infinite tenderness. She reached up, placing her soft, warm palm against my cheek.

"That rope didn't snap by accident, Conrad," she whispered softly. "It snapped because love is stronger than death. It snapped because you were meant to save me."

I leaned down and pressed my lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss—a kiss filled with twenty-two years of devotion, the triumph of survival, and the promise of a lifetime of shared happiness.
