Chapter 8 - The Corrupt Specialist Arrives with a Syringe Full of Quiet Endings

By 7:30 PM, the storm outside was raging, mirroring the tempest brewing within the walls of the Whitmore estate.
Downstairs in the grand ballroom, two hundred and fifty of New York and Connecticut’s wealthiest elites had gathered. Crystal chandeliers sparkled above ice sculptures, waiters in white tuxedos circulated silver trays of vintage champagne, and a twelve-piece string orchestra played Vivaldi’s Autumn.
Vanessa Whitmore was the undisputed star of the evening. Dressed in a breathtaking, backless emerald-green silk gown, dripping in emerald-and-diamond jewelry Ethan had purchased for their fifth anniversary, she moved gracefully among senators, CEOs, and socialites.
Her face was a masterpiece of tragic, dignified beauty.
“Thank you all for coming,” Vanessa murmured to a circle of sympathetic society matrons, dabbing a non-existent tear from her eye. “Ethan wanted so desperately to be down here with us tonight. But his condition… the doctors say his heart is simply giving out under the strain of his neurological exhaustion. We are praying for a miracle.”
Across the room, Julian Vance raised his champagne glass to Vanessa with a subtle, sinister wink.
At precisely 8:10 PM, Dr. Alistair Sterling entered the estate through the private garden gate, carrying his heavy leather medical bag. Margaret met him at the service elevator and escorted him silently up to the second floor.
“Is he sedated?” Dr. Sterling whispered as they walked down the dimly lit hallway of the west wing.
“He drank the 7:30 broth,” Margaret whispered back, her voice shaking uncontrollably. “He hasn’t moved in thirty minutes. Just get it over with, Alistair. I want this nightmare finished.”
Sterling smirked, pulling a pair of sterile latex gloves from his pocket. “Four minutes, Margaret. Then you can go downstairs and announce that the master has peacefully passed away in his sleep.”
Sterling opened the door to the master suite and stepped inside. Margaret remained in the hallway, leaning against the wall, trembling with nervous dread.
The bedroom was pitch black, illuminated only by the intermittent flashes of lightning outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. On the massive four-poster bed, a figure lay motionless beneath the heavy duvet, breathing with heavy, rhythmic wheezes.
Dr. Sterling approached the bedside with clinical coldness. He set his bag on the nightstand, clicked open the brass latches, and pulled out a glass syringe filled with a clear, lethal concentration of potassium chloride.
“Nothing personal, Ethan,” Sterling muttered under his breath, stepping toward the bed and reaching down to pull back the duvet. “Just good business.”
As his hand touched the blanket, the bedroom door clicked shut behind him.
The heavy brass lock turned with a loud, metallic THUD.
Before Dr. Sterling could turn around, the figure under the blanket sat up with lightning speed.
It wasn't a dying man.
Ethan Whitmore stood tall, fully dressed in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, his eyes blazing with absolute fury.
Before Sterling could scream, Ethan’s powerful right hand shot forward, clamping around the corrupt doctor’s throat like a vice of steel, slamming him violently against the heavy oak headboard.
“Looking for a vein, Doctor?” Ethan whispered, his voice a lethal, terrifying growl.
Sterling’s eyes bulged with sheer, paralyzing horror. The glass syringe slipped from his trembling fingers, but Ethan caught it out of mid-air with his left hand, holding the lethal needle two millimeters from Dr. Sterling’s right eye.
“E… Ethan?!” Sterling choked out, his face turning purple as he clawed at Ethan’s iron grip. “You’re… you’re supposed to be in a hepatic coma!”
“Your rodenticide was amateur, Sterling,” Ethan hissed, pressing the needle closer. “And your Cayman bank account is already seized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Drop to your knees. Now.”
Ethan shoved the doctor to the hardwood floor.
At that exact moment, the private study door opened, and two armed FBI tactical agents, led by Marcus Vance, stepped into the bedroom with suppressed sidearms drawn.
“Alistair Sterling,” Agent Lin said with icy precision. “You are under arrest for attempted premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and federal healthcare fraud.”
Sterling collapsed onto the carpet, weeping and hyperventilating in utter defeat.
Ethan adjusted his tuxedo cuffs, smoothed his lapels, and looked at Marcus.
“What’s the time, Marcus?”
Marcus checked his Rolex. “8:28 PM. Vanessa is taking the stage in the grand ballroom for the keynote toast in two minutes.”
May you like
Ethan looked toward the double doors leading to the grand staircase.
“Then let’s not keep my grieving wife waiting.”
